The film about the first female director Alice Gijs-Blašē will premiere in Latvia

The first part of the cinema on Saturday will be related to the Riga Photography Biennale 2020 and the Latvian Museum of Photography project “(In) Visible Authors”, dedicated to the history of photography in the 20th century. the first half of the work heritage of little-known or hitherto unknown Latvian female photographers. Within the thematic framework of this project, Pamela B. Green’s documentary “Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché, 2019” will be shown for the first time in Latvia.

The film is both a dedication and an intriguing detective story, trying to trace the events and circumstances that led to the French director, producer and screenwriter Alice Guy-Blaise (1873-1968) – the first female director and her unique contribution to more than 1,000 films – undeservedly forgotten.

Alice Gija-Blaise was one of the witnesses to the first screening of the invention of the Limier brothers’ cinema in Paris. At the time, she was working for Leon Gaumont’s photography company, and it was this experience that prompted Alice to take film art seriously, becoming the director of perhaps the world’s first feature film, The Cabbage Fairy (1896), and setting up a film studio in Fort Lly, In New Jersey, which became the first hot spot in American filmmaking before Hollywood. Blaise was a pioneer of various filming and editing techniques, as well as film genres and artistic techniques. Not only Alfred Hitchcock was enthusiastic about her work, but also Riga-born director and editing master Sergejs Eisenstein.

In its turn, the second part of the program thematically focuses on the relationship between reality and fiction in artistic practice, taking a closer look at the role of fiction and myth in the creation of modern and historical narratives.

Ben Shapiro’s Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters (2012) is the documentation for the artist Gregory Crewdson’s nearly decade-long work on the ambitious photo project Beneath the Roses. With a cinematic approach and scenography based on theatrical traditions, Cruudson creates scenes and stories of magical reality, in which mystery and miracles alternate with the most everyday banalities. But behind the irony and magical atmosphere lies a critical commentary on modern US society.

Internationally acclaimed London-based Palestinian artist Larissa Sansour and Danish writer Søren Lind in the short film-video essay “In the Future Porcelain, In the Future They Ate from 2015) organically alternating science fiction, archeology and politics. The video essay explores the role of myth in constructing history, facts and national identity. The film is the third of Sasura’s science fiction film trilogy, in which the author continues to address the central question of the relationship between truth and fiction in the context of the socio-political turmoil in the Middle East.

Before each film, a contextual introduction will be given by art critic and curator Šelda Puķīte.

The United States also does not recognize Lukashenko as a legitimate president of Belarus

“The August 9 elections were neither free nor fair. The results announced were fraudulent and do not give legitimacy,” the US State Department said.

“The United States cannot consider Alexander Lukashenko a legitimately elected leader in Belarus,” the statement said.

Latvia, Lithuania, Germany, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland have also made statements in the past that Lukashenko is not a legitimate president of Belarus.

Lukashenko’s inauguration ceremony took place at Minsk’s Independence Palace on Wednesday, which was kept secret until the last moment.

The inauguration ceremony is usually announced in advance and is a large nationwide event, but this time it was kept secret.

There have been widespread protests against the Lukashenko regime in Belarus since the presidential elections on 9 August.

According to official results, Lukashenko won 80.1% of the vote in the election, while opposition candidate Tikhanovsky won only 10.1% of the vote.

However, the opposition, based on evidence of unprecedented violations, claims that these results are falsified.

The European Union (EU) and other Western countries have also refused to recognize the election results, and Belarus is facing US and EU sanctions for falsifying election results and suppressing protesters.

UN human rights investigator Anaisa Marina said last week that more than 10,000 people have been aggressively detained and more than 500 allegations of torture and thousands of people brutally beaten in Belarus since the elections.

Sevastov loses to Kostyuk in the second round of the US Open

Sevastov ranks 45th in the WTA rank and was numbered 31st in this tournament, but Kostjuk ranks 137th.

Sevastova has earned 70 WTA points for reaching the second round.

Both tennis players start the game with a convincing service, and the Ukrainian had several “aisles”. In the fifth game at the result 40:15 Sevastova did not use two breakballs, but in the next she lost her own serve, which allowed Kostyukai to take the lead with 4-2. The waiters then won, with the Ukrainian tennis player succeeding in the set with 6-3.

The first game of the second set turned out to be intense, in which Kostjuka did not use seven breakballs and the result was “equal” nine times, but Sevastova reached 1-0 only with the third approach. He continued without breaks and won the waiters, so the result was 6-6. The winner of the set was determined in Taiwan, where the 18-year-old Ukrainian came in 2: 5, but scored four points in a row and came to the match ball, which was used – 7: 5 and won the whole game.

Sevastova had one “aisle” in this fight, and the opponent – even seven elusive services. There were two and three double errors, respectively. Kostjuka scored 30 points with an attacking blow, but Sevastova only five. Slightly worse result for a Ukrainian in unforced errors – 29/22.

In the first round, Sevastova defeated 16-year-old American Coco Gofu (WTA 51) with 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, while Kostjuka defeated Darya Kasatkin (WTA 70) with 6-1, 6-2. Sevastova’s victory allowed the WTA tour to end a series of eight losses that began last October.

The two tennis players had not played against each other before in their careers.

Sevastova’s “US Open” is the most successful Grand Slam tournament of her career – she played in the semi-finals in New York last year, but previously played for the quarterfinals for two years in a row. Last year, a step back, because last year the superiority of the Croatian Petras Martiča had to be acknowledged.

Meanwhile, Kostyuk has never gone beyond the third round in the Grand Slam, but this season she was only able to reach the main events in the International tournaments in Prague and Lyon, but previously the athlete has competed in the International Tennis Federation (ITF). She won the W60 competition in Cairo this year, but in total this season the Ukrainian accounted for 20 matches, in which 14 successes were celebrated.

Sevastova has won only two of 11 games this season, having previously won the Federation Cup when they beat Serena Williams. On the WTA tour, Liepaja has a balance of 1-8 this season, but, including last year, she had a series of eight losses.

This summer, Sevastova took part in two demonstration tournaments in Germany, one of which won. She was also part of the Latvian national team at the Estonian-Latvian match in Tallinn, giving way to the leading tennis players of the northern neighbors in both singles. Rank points were not shared in these tournaments.

It has already been reported that several tennis stars, including Latvia’s first racket Alona Ostapenko, will not be able to be seen at the US Open Championship due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

New York was one of the hardest hit cities in the United States in March and April, when the Covid-19 epidemic took over the United States. The temporary hospital was even set up on the indoor courts of the US Tennis Center.

Following the cancellation of the Wimbledon Championship, the US Open became the second Grand Slam tournament of the season after the Australian Championship. The French Open is also scheduled for this year.

Roma and Travelers in Western Europe are struggling

The report is based on a survey of more than 4,500 Roma and Travelers in Belgium, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom at the end of 2018 and early 2019.

The survey’s findings “serve as an urgent reminder of the need for governments and society to break the vicious circle of poverty and exclusion,” said FRA Director Michael O’Flaertie.

In France, a survey found that 22% of nomads live in households that cannot afford basic goods and services, such as food and heating.

In almost all of the groups surveyed in six countries, “an unexpectedly large number of adults and children experience hunger,” the report concluded.

In Sweden, 22% of all Roma and Travelers reported that one of them had to go to bed hungry at least once a month before the survey.

The report says the lack of job opportunities in these communities is partly due to discrimination and early school leaving.

Roma and nomadic children often face hostility. In the survey, almost a third of parents indicated that their children had been ridiculed at school for their identity.

Two thirds of the surveyed young people have only primary education.

Non-participation in the labor market is also characteristic of the surveyed communities. In France, only 13% of nomadic women were in paid employment the month before the survey.

Another FRA survey shows that almost half of EU citizens (45%) would feel uncomfortable if they had Roma or nomads gathered in their neighborhood. The highest number – 52% – is in France.

To improve the situation, the FRA calls on EU Member States to allow nomads to lead their lifestyles by providing enough decent stopping places.

The FRA also suggests developing work placements and public sector job schemes to improve employment opportunities for these communities.

In the field of education, the agency called for education to be tailored to the needs of Roma and Travelers, for example by offering special training assistants, home study opportunities and distance learning.

Coach Cicurskis, who has raised many national team and NHL hockey players, has been fired in Liepaja

Cicurskis has been working in Liepāja since the end of the 1990s, and the first steps on the ice were taken by the players of the National Hockey League (NHL) club, Riga “Dinamo”, the Latvian national team and Liepāja teams.

Cicurskis has trained such well-known hockey players as Sandis Ozoliņš, Rūdolfs Balcers, Mika Indrašis, Ronalds Ķēniņš, Jānis Kalniņš, Kristiāns Pelšu and many others.

Recently, he has had disagreements with the head of Liepāja Sports Games School Guntars Kikučs, which was one of the reasons why Cicurskis no longer works with young hockey players as of April 30. The origins of the conflict can be traced back to the winter, when Cicurski had a sharp exchange of words with the school curators about a document not sent to the Latvian Hockey Federation (LHF) in time.

“I think maybe I didn’t have to express my thoughts in sharp form, but there were a lot of witnesses in the training who can testify – I insulted him or not. The next day I was called [priekšniecība], announced that I was being released for insulting a school employee. Two parents were immediately found. One of my parents had written a letter stating that I was a Latvian hockey caper. People tend to see white and black. I don’t consider myself a squirrel, but I don’t think a parent from the sidelines can judge my coach’s competence. Another father complained that his son did not play much, “the newspaper quoted Cicurska as saying.

Had Cicurski not been fired, he would have continued as a coach. But now, if I call back, he strongly doubts whether he will go.

“Would you go to train elsewhere? The offers are clear, but I will not reveal which ones. It is also no secret that Kulibaba and Lebedev work in Jelgava, who called me to themselves a year ago, when the previous wind currents started,” Cicurskis reveals.

During his career, the 74-year-old specialist led the Latvian U-18 and U-20, but in the clubs of “Liepājas Metalurgs” and “Liepājas” he was the assistant head coach of the master teams and the head coach of the doubles team. Cicurskis has mainly trained children’s and youth teams.

Pļaviņš reveals why they managed to win a Belgian duo with Toča

The Latvians placed in the fourth number tournament beat the Belgian duo Drīss Kokelkorens and Toms van Valle 2-0 (21:16, 21:19), who are playing with the 29th number in Jūrmala.

“We won with the block,” Pļaviņš said after the match, taking into account that the Latvians also won the last point after an unsuccessful attempt by van Valles to punch a hole in the block formed by Toča. “The Belgians have a good serve, but this time it didn’t work. In the second set, we didn’t take a few points ourselves.”

“Knapi, barely,” says the duo guard Pļaviņš, when asked about getting used to the central square, where he had to start playing right away this year.

“The sand is also medium. It’s good. We trained on hard, but in the commercial tournament in Utrecht they were even softer,” adds Točs.

In the Utrecht competition, in which the duo reached the semi-finals, but the Belgians won the fourth place in the finals, Pļaviņš notes that their format requires taking everything they can, but then nothing happens. “However, the 20-point set format can do more than what was planned before the game,” he said of the differences.

From the positive Dutch tournament, Točs did not hesitate to mention the training of a “sautauta” – gaining points after the opponent’s service – during the tournament, because it is of great importance in the “King of the Court” format, but Pļaviņš emphasizes that he managed to see the current Belgian ability.

Tomorrow, in the match for the first place in the group, Latvians will meet with Austrian veterans Alexander Horst and Clemens Doppler.

The European Beach Volleyball Championship in Jūrmala takes place from September 15 to 20. The 32-pair men’s and women’s tournament brings together the best European beach volleyball men’s duets from 15 countries and women’s duets from 13 countries.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the tournament is eligible for one of the strongest tournaments of the season in terms of status in the world.

Although the Olympic rankings related to the Covid-19 pandemic were frozen on March 16 this year, the European Championship is traditionally one of the tournaments in which teams compete for Olympic ranking points.

Volleyball players will also compete for a total prize pool of 200,000 euros.

The decision to organize the competition in Latvia was made at the meeting of the Board of the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) on July 7, 2020.

In the previous European Championship in Jūrmala in 2017, Jānis Šmēdiņš and Aleksandrs Samoilovs became vice-champions. In August 2017, Šmēdiņš with Samoilov reached the final, where he lost to the Italians Daniel Lupo and Paolo Nikola, but the surprisingly high fifth place was won by Graudiņa and Kravčenoka, as well as Mārtiņš Pļaviņš with Harald Regža.

This year, the competitions of the World Tour stage were to take place in Jūrmala, but this tournament was postponed to the next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Saturday, cyclists in the section with Lura were waiting for the 36.2-kilometer-long section with a separate start.

Pogačars crossed the finish line the fastest, 57 seconds behind the overall leader Rogličs. The second stage was Toms Dumulēns from the Netherlands, who was one minute and 21 seconds behind, and the third with the same time – the teammate of the second Latvian cyclist Toma Skujiņa (“Trek – Segafredo”) from Australia, Ričijs Porte.

Skujiņš took the 127th place, riding nine minutes and 40 seconds slower than the winner, but in the 46th place with six minutes and 18 seconds behind Neilands, the best of Latvian cyclists, finished.

In the overall standings, the yellow leader’s shirt will now be applied by Pogačars, who is 59 seconds ahead of his compatriot Rogličs. The third with three and a half minutes behind the leader is Porte. Former third-place owner Miguel Angel Lopez (“Astana Pro”) of Colombia, on the other hand, lost six minutes and 17 seconds to the winner on Saturday, being one place above Neiland, and resigned to sixth place in the overall standings.

Herring takes 80th place with less than three hours and 53 minutes behind the leader, but Neilands loses less than four hours and ten minutes to the leader and ranks five places lower.

Also in the king of the mountain, Pogačars is now ahead of the current leader, Ecuadorian Richard Karapas. Herringbone has slipped two places lower and is 18th with 24 points, but Neiland is 50th with two points.

The last stage of the competition will take place on Sunday. On that relatively flat track, with one climb of the fourth category, you have to measure 122 kilometers from Montlaggio to Paris.

For Neiland, this is his debut in France, but Skujiņš is participating in this competition for the third year in a row.

The Tour de France, which is deservedly considered one of the largest sporting events in the world, is celebrating its 107th anniversary this year.

Last year, Skujiņš finished in the ninth place in the 17th stage, but in 2018 he was in the fifth place in one of the stages, as well as several stages in the mountain king’s shirt. Last year, Skujiņš finished in the 81st position in the overall rating.

The last time two Latvians were together in the “Tour de France” was in 2002. At that time, Arvis Piziks and Raivis Belohvoščiks each rode in their team.

In total, the French tour is scheduled for 21 stages this year, finishing on September 20 in the Champs Elysées.

Lawyer Greek: Political forces are behind the assassination of Pavel Rebenok

Commenting on his wife’s statements that the perpetrators of Rebenok’s murder were known, the Greek RīgaTV 24 clarified that it could not be clearly and unequivocally stated, it was a matter of proof, but by elementary calculation it could be concluded that it was a political murder backed by political forces.

“I want to say specifically that it is a political party in the JKP, it is Bordan, who has not seen Pavel since he represented Yaujeikar. It is Jurash, who is the gray cardinal and the actual organizer of this party, together with the party “Unity”, which actively supports the OIK. When Pavel became the chairman of the council of Latvenergo, there was a huge political pressure for Pavel not to stay on the council of Latvenergo, because it was very important for the recipients of the OIK that no one else was present on these issues, ”explained Kreuris.

Asked whether the murder could also be related to JSC Olainfarm, the Greek replied in the affirmative. Bordāns and Jurašs have also been very active here, as have the active defense of Signe Baldere-Sildedze and those standing behind them, who ensured that a “bus meeting” was registered, which provided any opportunity to change what the Senate of the Supreme Court found. that such decisions can not be. This is a political cover that coincides in this particular case with the political interests of these people, which are linked to both the port of Skulte and the OIK. “

Commenting on the statements of the Minister of Justice that after this case it is necessary to think about public safety, the Greek was harsh: “Bordan will never miss the opportunity to show himself in public, and at this moment it is pathetic”.

But going on with the murder, the Greek explains why it is not allowed that it was primarily a robbery. “Those who go after money, jewelry, go after a certain goal. You can’t tell if watches and jewelry are in your home. Maybe they’re in the safe, maybe somewhere else. Without asking the question and killing the person, it is clear that it is a custom murder, ”the Greek is convinced that the robbery version is excluded.

As Rebenock’s close friend, the Greek pointed out in an interview that many find it hard to believe that Paul was an absolutely honest man who had nothing to do with the oligarchs and earned what he owned through his professional activities.

“His heart ached for this country and for order in this country. We do not want to allow such methods to address issues. We want the country to treat everyone fairly, not just those close to politics who benefit from it, ”said Greek.
