Pour comprendre pourquoi et comment, il faut d’abord savoir que l’argument choc du Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 est évidemment sa finesse. 4,2 mm quand il est déplié (143,2 x 158,4 x 4,2 mm). Ce n’est vraiment, mais alors vraiment pas beaucoup. Sans l’existence du Honor Magic V5 venu lui couper l’herbe sous le pied, nous aurions eu affaire au smartphone pliable le plus fin du monde.

En main, le Galaxy Z Fold 7 offre donc une impressionnante sensation de raffinement et d’élégance. La finesse s’associe d’ailleurs à un poids nettement réduit pour ce genre de format avec 215 grammes sur la balance. Dans l’absolu, c’est donc un smartphone relativement lourd, certes, mais quand on ouvre le téléphone, c’est vraiment une impression bienvenue de légèreté qui se dégage.

Pour vous donner une idée, sachez que le Galaxy Z Fold 7 est moins lourd qu’un Galaxy S25 Ultra ou qu’un iPhone 16 Pro Max. Si la masse de ces modèles ne vous gêne pas, alors ce n’est clairement pas sur ce pliant que vous serez embêté.

Oui mais voilà, en dehors de sa finesse — qui est une vraie prouesse, je ne veux pas euphémiser cela — la forme dépliée ne réserve pas vraiment d’autres surprises du point de vue de la prise en main. En revanche, cette même finesse prend tout son sens quand on utilise le Fold 7 en mode plié.

Le smartphone plié prend enfin drastiquement ses distances avec la forme de brique épaisse qui grévait encore l’expérience proposées par les prédécesseurs. C’est donc bien plus confortable dans le creux de la main, on a simplement l’impression d’avoir un grand smartphone classique. Là aussi, une comparaison avec le S25 Ultra est pertinente. Il ne convient donc pas aux amateurs de petits téléphones, mais il ne détone pas parmi les grands.

C’est donc ici, tout particulièrement, que s’illustre l’intérêt de ce nouveau design. Mais à cela s’ajoute aussi le nouveau ratio de l’écran extérieur à 21:9. Plus large, le Galaxy Z Fold 7 se montre largement plus confortable pour pianoter sur le clavier alphanumérique quand il est plié.

Bref, cette finesse du Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 permet de se rapprocher plus que jamais de la promesse initiale des smartphones pliables : avoir un téléphone qu’on peut utiliser normalement et qui a l’avantage de pouvoir se transformer en tablette. Et ce, sans avoir à faire de compromis sur le format plié.

J’ai vraiment ressenti un effet « coup de cœur » pour le design de ce Galaxy Z Fold 7. D’autant plus que Samsung propose toujours de belles finitions mates agréables sous le doigt, des angles pas trop pointues et des bords droits mais pas tranchants. Le module photo à l’arrière n’évite malheureusement pas la protubérance et l’effet bancal quand le smartphone est posé à plat. Néanmoins, il faut aussi un bel effort d’amincissement pour éviter que ce défaut de relief ne soit vraiment gênant.

Tout n’est pas rose pour autant. Malgré un Gorilla Glass Victus 2 à l’arrière (et Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 sur l’écran externe), les rayures apparaissent bien vite sur ce Galaxy Z Fold 7. Je sais que deux membres du groupe de journalistes et de YouTubeurs tech français ayant assisté, comme moi, à l’Unpacked, ont observé de petits bobos sur l’arrière de leurs exemplaires de test en moins de 24 heures.

Quelques jours après, c’était à mon tour d’en constater sur mon Fold 7 que je n’ai pourtant vraiment pas maltraité. C’est ici la seule réelle inquiétude que je nourris quant à la durabilité du Fold 7. Côté charnière, je trouve que Samsung fait toujours du très bon travail pour rassurer son public en offrant ce qu’il faut de résistance pour qu’on n’ait pas l’impression de pouvoir casser l’appareil à la moindre manipulation. Notez toutefois que le téléphone ne semble pas se déplier totalement. Ça perturbe un peu une fois qu’on s’en rend compte, mais c’est quelque chose qu’on a déjà vu sur d’autres smartphones pliables. On parle là vraiment d’un tout petit chouïa de rien du tout.

Quand on ouvre le Galaxy Z Fold 7, on tombe nez à nez avec le grand écran. Il est toujours frappé d’une pliure visible au centre, mais cette dernière s’est nettement atténuée. Elle apparait selon les jeux de reflets sur elle et sous le doigt elle ne se ressent presque pas. Samsung rattrape son retard de ce côté-là. Notez aussi qu’il y a désormais un poinçon sur cette dalle au lieu d’une caméra cachée en dessous de l’écran comme c’était le cas sur les générations précédentes. Le constructeur justifie ce choix par les contraintes de la finesse.

Enfin, il y a petit détail que j’apprécie bien : le lecteur d’empreintes sur le côté est très réactif et marche plus rapidement pour moi et mes doigts gras que bon nombre de lecteurs d’empreintes intégrés dans l’écran.

Le Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 a deux écrans. Celui à l’extérieur est utilisable au format fermé comme s’il s’agissait d’un smartphone classique. Celui à l’intérieur est capable de se plier et propose une expérience « tablette ».

Les deux dalles profitent d’un affichage Oled et d’un taux de rafraîchissement allant de 1 à 120 Hz. Quant aux diagonales et aux définitions, voici ce qu’il faut retenir.

  • Écran externe : 6,9 pouces, Full HD+ (2520 x 1080 pixels).
  • Écran interne : 8 pouces (2184 x 1968 pixels).

Tout d’abord, il est bon de rassurer d’emblée. Les écrans du Fold 7 sont très bons dans l’ensemble. Les défauts que nous allons évoquer ici et là viendront embêter les plus puristes. Et je le dirai toujours, à plus de 2000 euros le smartphone, il faut pinailler.

Côté luminosité maximale, pas grand-chose à redire. Avec notre sonde et le logiciel CalMan de Portrait Display, nous mesurons de jolis pics.

Écran externe :

  • 1347nits en SDR ;
  • 24221 nits en HDR.

Écran interne :

  • 1330 nits en SDR ;
  • 2471 nits en HDR.

Nous n’avons pas réussi à monter jusqu’aux 2600 nits promis par Samsung, mais les résultats obtenus restent excellents et laissent plutôt entendre que nous n’avons simplement pas réussi à reproduire les conditions du pic à 2600 nits. Pour rappel, sur les dalles Oled, nous sommes obligés de régler le smartphone en lumiosité automatique et à balancer du mieux qu’on peut un flash dans le capteur de luminosité ambiante. C’est seulement ainsi que nous arrivons à vraiment atteindre les valeurs maximales. Sinon, en mode manuel, la jauge pleine ne représente pas le réel pic de luminosité.
