Directors-General WHO and Red Cross Observe Conflict Devastation in Yemen
Sanaa, Yemen – The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, visited Yemen today to assess the humanitarian situation following years of conflict.
In a joint statement, they expressed their dismay at the widespread destruction and human suffering caused by the war, which has been raging since 2015. “The situation in Yemen is devastating,” they said. “Years of conflict have left millions of people without access to basic services, including healthcare.”
The directors-general emphasized the importance of ensuring safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid, and they called on all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian law.
“Health workers and facilities must be protected, and humanitarian organizations must be granted safe passage to deliver much-needed assistance to the people of Yemen,” they said.
They also stressed the need for a political solution to the conflict, as lasting peace is essential for any meaningful humanitarian response. “The only solution to this crisis is a political one,” they said. “We urge all parties to engage in meaningful dialogue to reach a sustainable peace.”
Tedros and Maurer also met with Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, who praised their efforts to alleviate the humanitarian situation in the country.
