United Airlines Removes Middle Seats for Extra Passenger Space

United Airlines is introducing a new seating configuration on its Airbus A321XLR fleet that replaces the traditional middle seat with a fixed table. According to an airline news release issued July 14, 2026, the design aims to provide window and aisle passengers in the Economy Plus cabin with additional elbow room and personal space on long-haul flights. United will be the first U.S. carrier to implement this specific seating layout.

Design Features of the New Economy Plus Seating

The updated configuration is part of a broader interior refresh for United’s 50 new Airbus A321XLR aircraft. In the designated row, the middle seat is removed and replaced by a permanently fixed table that spans the width of the space. This modification is intended to offer travelers more room to maneuver during international travel.

Beyond the table, these Economy Plus seats already include three additional inches of legroom compared to standard Economy class. Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, stated in the release that the airline is investing across its entire fleet to offer customers more choice and value. The A321XLR aircraft will also feature lie-flat seats in the United Polaris cabin.

Fleet Rollout and Future Route Expansion

United plans to begin operating the A321XLR fleet on domestic routes starting in the fall of 2026. International service is scheduled to commence by early 2027. According to the airline, more than 50% of the new fleet will be in active service by 2028.

These aircraft are slated to replace aging Boeing 757s on existing international corridors. Additionally, the increased range of the A321XLR allows United to launch new direct routes to locations in Europe and South America. While the airline has confirmed the seating design, pricing for the new cabin configuration has not yet been announced.

Evolution of Long-Haul Comfort

The “table-middle” seat is not the only innovation United is testing to improve passenger comfort on long-haul flights. The airline previously announced the “Relax Row” concept, which is scheduled for a 2027 launch on Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft.

The Relax Row provides an option for passengers to purchase a row of three seats located between Economy and Premium Plus. These seats feature adjustable leg rests that allow the entire row to transform into a couch-like surface, specifically designed to help travelers sleep during extended international journeys.

Pro Tip: Tracking Seat Availability

Airlines frequently update seat maps as new aircraft enter the fleet. If you are booking a flight for late 2026 or 2027, check the aircraft type on your booking screen. Look for the “A321XLR” designation to identify if your flight features the new Economy Plus table configuration.
