Adam Yates updates on brother Simon and new role

From Grand Tour Glory to Gym Gains: Simon Yates’ Reinvention in Retirement

The cycling world was stunned earlier this year when Simon Yates announced his retirement at the peak of his career, fresh off a victorious Giro d’Italia. But while the news signaled the end of an era for one of cycling’s most dynamic riders, it also marked the beginning of a new chapter – one focused on personal reinvention. According to his brother and fellow pro, Adam Yates, Simon is embracing a lifestyle previously impossible during his demanding professional career.

A Shift in Focus: Beyond the Bike

For years, professional cyclists have prioritized a lean physique optimized for climbing and endurance, often avoiding extensive upper body work. Simon Yates is now breaking that mold. “He’s still happy. I mean, he’s getting in the gym now, trying to get big in a different way,” Adam shared. “You know, he’s gonna do upper body, and he’s gonna work out. He’s just trying things that he never had a chance to do as a bike rider.” This shift highlights the sacrifices athletes make to maintain peak performance and the freedom they experience when those constraints are lifted.

Simon Yates’ sudden retirement shocked the cycling world

A Perfect Exit Strategy

Adam Yates believes his brother’s timing was impeccable. After 13 years in the professional peloton, Simon secured victories in both the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España, along with stage wins in all three Grand Tours. “You win the Giro and a stage of the Tour, and to finish it on that high, I consider that’s a nice way to proceed out,” Adam stated. “It’s not just a professional career that you do for 10 years or so, we’ve been riding a bike since we were eight or nine. It’s a long time to be doing the same thing… Now it’s time to call it a day.”

Adam Yates: Supporting the Next Generation at UAE Team Emirates

While Simon explores new avenues, Adam remains focused on his own racing career with UAE Team Emirates. However, his role within the team has shifted, prioritizing the development of young talent. At the 2026 UAE Tour, Adam is dedicated to supporting teammate Isaac del Toro.

Backing Isaac del Toro

Despite a history of success at the UAE Tour, including a win in 2020, Adam Yates is not targeting the general classification this year. “No, no, I’m not here for GC,” he confirmed. He explained that the course profile, featuring flat time trials and climbs at the end of stages, favors riders like Remco Evenepoel and Isaac del Toro. “Here is more completely flat and a climb at the end. So it’s a different kind of dynamic, and here you should back the best horse, and our horse is Isaac.”

Del Toro’s rapid progress has impressed Adam. “I think he surprised himself [last year], to be honest,” Adam noted. “He said he made some mistakes, and he changed some things with the training, and he took a big step.” Adam believes the 22-year-old has immense potential. “He’s super smart, Isaac; he knows what he’s doing. And when you listen to the body, listen to yourself, and you grab advice from other people – you put it all together, and you get the results as he does.” He concluded, “He’s still young, he’s got the room to improve, and as long as he keeps his feet on the ground and keeps working hard, then the sky’s the limit.”

The Rise of Velo-Cybernetics in Modern Cycling

As professional cycling continues to evolve, the integration of cybernetic technology is paving the way for unprecedented advancements. Teams are increasingly using AI-driven technologies to analyze real-time data, enhancing performance and strategic planning. This trend promises to revolutionize how cyclists and teams operate.

In the 2025 UAE Tour, we saw future-forward strategies with riders like Tadej Pogacar leading early sprints to test the peloton. This strategy, often orchestrated with the help of AI prediction models, highlights how technology can alter race dynamics.

How Technology Redefines Race Strategies

The use of AI in cycling spawns new strategies. Teams employ predictive models to decide the best moments for attacks, pace adjustments, and energy conservation. Analyzing factors such as climate conditions, competitors’ form, and historical data, these tools allow for informed, split-second decisions.

Consider the example of Merlier’s team, who recalibrated their strategy post a challenging stage to ensure a victorious outcome. It’s clear that in modern racing, having access to advanced analytics is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity.

Highlighting Real-Life Applications

Pro Cycling teams that have adopted these technologies report faster response times and improved race outcomes. For instance, movement tracking devices have minimized collision risks and informed better positioning tactics.

Addressing Safety in Competitive Racing

Late-stage crashes, like those experienced by Merlier, emphasize the need for enhanced safety measures. As cycling speeds increase, so does the importance of rider safety.

Teams are now exploring innovative safety gear and real-time alerts to minimize risks. Advanced materials in jerseys and protective gear are being tested to withstand high-impact crashes.

Learning from Past Incidents

Analysis of crash data helps teams and governing bodies develop protocols to avoid similar incidents. This includes better track design, improved equipment standards, and reinforced protective measures.

Interactive Elements in Viewing Experiences

For audiences, the integration of interactive technologies is enhancing the viewing experience. Features like virtual reality broadcasts and augmented reality apps allow fans to engage with races like never before.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does AI impact daily training? AI tailors training regimes based on an athlete’s performance metrics, optimizing recovery and peak performance times.
  • Can technology predict race outcomes? While it can offer probabilities, the unpredictable nature of races means outcomes always retain a degree of uncertainty.
  • Are safety measures causing delays? Although initially complex, improved safety protocols ensure smoother and quicker race resolutions in the long term.
