Jokowi’s Nero-like Silence on Yos Suprapto Art Exhibition’s Disappearance

President Jokowi Reacts to Cancellation of National Gallery's Response: A Dispute Over Curatorial Influence.”>Yos Suprapto Art Exhibition

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia — President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has expressed surprise over the cancellation of an art exhibition by Indonesian artist Yos Suprapto at the National Gallery in Jakarta last week.

"I only found out about this from my aide, Syarif, earlier today," Jokowi said, as reported by Detikjateng. "I believe that the creativity and political aspirations expressed in Yos Suprapto’s work should be valued and respected."

As the leader of a democratic country, Jokowi stressed the importance of appreciating artistic expressions. He also dismissed concerns about one of Suprapto’s paintings being likened to him, stating, "I don’t see that as a problem."

Jokowi admitted he didn’t know the reason behind the cancellation but reinforced his support for artistic expression. "I don’t know which paintings were allowed to be exhibited, but I believe that the creativity of the artist should be respected," he added.

The cancellation of the exhibition sparked discussions on social media, with many viewing it as a form of censorship targeting artists’ criticisms of the government. The controversy stemmed from a disagreement between the exhibition’s curator and Suprapto over five of the 30 paintings in the collection.

Suprapto had agreed to cover two paintings with black cloth but later demanded that the exhibition be canceled after being asked to remove three more. "If the five paintings were removed, the narrative would be incomplete," Suprapto explained. "I won’t be cowed into silence by curatorial fear of political practice and government repression."

Curator’s Explanation

In a written statement, exhibition curator Suwarno Wisetrotomo stated that two paintings were excluded because they expressed personal opinions that did not align with the exhibition’s theme, "Rebirth: Land for Food Sovereignty." "[The paintings] detract from the strong and positive message of the exhibition’s theme," Suwarno said.

Yos Suprapto’s Solo Exhibition: A Polemic on the ‘Critic’ Painting and the Underlying Issue of Censorship

Yos Suprapto‘s Controversial Exhibition: A Tussle Between Artistic Freedom and Censorship

Senior artist Yos Suprapto’s solo exhibition at the Galeri Nasional Indonesia opened with a bang, quite literally, as the event ended in a scuffle between the artist and the gallery’s management. The exhibit, titled "Kebangkitan: Tanah untuk Kedaulatan Pangan," aims to spotlight the critical issue of land degradation and the importance of sustainable farming methods. However, controversy surrounding the exhibition’s content and the artist’s defiance have stolen the spotlight.

The Exhibition’s Controversial Pieces

Yos Suprapto presented 37 paintings and installations that criticized various social and political issues. Two of his works, "Konoha I" and "Konoha II," sparked particular debate. "Konoha I" depicts a ruling figure, symbolizing a "Raja Jawa," sitting on a throne, crushing the common people beneath his feet. Around him, armed guards stand ready to violence. "Konoha II," meanwhile, features a grotesque scene of individuals humiliating each other, reflecting societal degradation.

The Gallery’s Stance and the Artist’s Defiance

Initially, the Galeri Nasional Indonesia approved the exhibition but later attempted to censor the two controversial pieces. They argued that the works were inappropriate, mesum (indecent), or did not fit the exhibition’s theme and weight. However, Yos Suprapto refused to adhere to their demands. He insisted on displaying all his works without alteration, asserting his artistic freedom.

"I’m not here to promote a political agenda. I’m an artist. I make art," Yos Suprapto told reporters. "I won’t let anyone dictate what I should or shouldn’t show in my exhibition."

Public Outcry and Support

News of the censorship attempt quickly spread, igniting a firestorm of criticism and support for Yos Suprapto. Many criticized the gallery for attempting to stifle artistic expression. Consequently, some politicians stepped in to voice their support for the artist and urged the gallery to respect artistic freedom.

"Censorship has no place in a functioning democracy, especially when it comes to art," said Hartarto Sarwoto, a prominent Indonesian politician. "We must support artists like Yos Suprapto who dare to challenge the status quo."

The Exhibit’s Fate Remains Unknown

As of now, the fate of Yos Suprapto’s exhibition hangs in the balance. Although the artist has defied the gallery’s demands, the management has yet to make a final decision regarding the exhibit’s fate. Gallery officials have stated that they are still discussing the matter internally.

Yos Suprapto’s unwavering stance on artistic freedom has captivated the public and sparked discussions about censorship in Indonesia’s art scene. As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the Galeri Nasional Indonesia to see if they will uphold artistic expression or bow to external pressure.

The Decline of Yos Suprapto’s Art Continues at the National Gallery

Gallery's Response: A Dispute Over Curatorial Influence.”>Yos Suprapto‘s Artworks at Galeri Nasional: Eventful Penurunan Still in Progress

Tim from Yos Suprapto’s artist assistants are still in the process of removing all artworks that were on display in the A Building of Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Gambir, Central Jakarta. This process started yesterday, Monday (23/12/2024), late afternoon and is expected to continue until tomorrow or the next day. The most time-consuming process is the dismantling of installations that use electrical components.

Munir, Yos Suprapto’s main assistant who had just arrived at around 09.29 WIB, was busy preparing the electrical components of an installation titled "Terrains" where 38 pieces of earthenware filled with soil and equipped with electrical components were lined up. Each earthenware has a lamp that lights up when the soil within it is in good condition.

"These electrical components are not directly connected to the electrical source. There is a mechanism that is not too complicated. However, we still have to check one by one," explained Munir.

Among the exhibited pieces, there is a large-sized painting titled "Resurrection" which illustrates the process of destroying and rehabilitating the land. This painting, measuring 10 meters, is the largest artwork in the exhibition space.

On the side of the installation titled "Nuansan", there are still around 32 paintings on display. There are about 10 small-sized black-and-white paintings scattered among the large paintings.

Munir estimated that the process of dismantling this installation would continue until evening or the next day. The paintings and installations dismantled would then be sent to Yos Suprapto’s hometown in Yogyakarta.

Yos Suprapto himself was not seen overseeing the removal of his artworks. However, Munir confirmed that Yos would return to Yogyakarta that night.

Initially, it was reported that Yos Suprapto had decided to remove all of his artworks from Galeri Nasional due to the inability to reach a consensus with the curator and the gallery regarding the presentation of his exhibition titled "Resurrection: Earth for National Food Sovereignty" which was originally scheduled to take place from December 19, 2024 to January 19, 2025.

On the evening of Monday (23/12/2024), Yos said, "We have reached a consensus among the three of us, namely me as the artist, the gallery, and the previous curator. But unfortunately, we couldn’t find a meeting point in this discussion. So, this exhibition can’t be continued because we can’t find a meeting point. Starting from understanding the narrative."

Yos explained that the exhibition that he demanded should illustrate the condition of the land in each of the 38 provinces in Indonesia. He wanted to show whether the land in each province was in good condition or not, which could be indicated by the lamp at the top of each earthenware.

"That’s nuanced. So it can’t be like this, like this, like this. It has to be narrated like this. If it’s narrated like this, how can we present it running? That’s the problem," said Yos Supraipotent.

For the record, earlier, Yos Suprapto had removed approximately 37 of his paintings that had been displayed for several days before the exhibition was scheduled to open. Yos did this to protest what he called the censorship of his works by the gallery curator.

Art Exhibition of Iconic Indonesian Artist Yos Suprapto Stripped from National Gallery

In an unexpected turn of events, a much-anticipated exhibition of works by esteemed Indonesian artist Yos Suprapto has been abruptly removed from the Galeri Nasional Indonesia. The solo exhibition, slated to open this week, was quietly pulled from the gallery’s schedule without any official explanation.

Speculation about the sudden cancellation has been rife among art enthusiasts and cultural circles. Some art critics have hinted at the exhibition’s potential controversy, suggesting that the works on display may have stepped into political or cultural sensitivities. While no specific details have been confirmed, the potential for the exhibition to spark debate is high, given Suprapto’s history of using art to address social and political issues.

In a statement, the Galeri Nasional Indonesia maintained a stance of ambiguity, stating only that the exhibition’s cancellation stemmed from "internal reasons." However, sources close to the matter have indicated that the decision may have been influenced by pressure from higher authorities.

This is not the first time one of Suprapto’s exhibitions has been shrouded in controversy. In the past, his works have been censored and exhibitions canceled due to their perceived critical stance against the government or societal norms. Despite this, Suprapto remains one of Indonesia’s most acclaimed and influential artists, known for his bold and provocative depictions of contemporary Indonesian life.

As the art world awaits further clarification on the exhibition’s demise, one can’t help but wonder if the fear of engaging with controversial topics has once again silenced a powerful voice in Indonesian art.

Penganut Agama Hindu Peringati Hari Raya Nyepi berpartisipasi pores di Bali

exemple:

концепис:A set of new precautions have been implemented this year as part of the Nyepi tradition due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The aspectos includes:

  • Pesta, the day before Nyepi, was celebrated in strict silence at home. No street parades or rituals were held in public places.
  • On Nyepi day, each household must limit the number of people saying prayers and performing sacred rituals to a maximum of five.
  • Daily activities are not allowed, but each household can choose one member to leave the house to buy essential goods or carry out other urgent tasks.
  • Public transportation will not operate on Nyepi day, and airports in and out of Bali will be closed.
  • Indecent behavior is strictly prohibited during Nyepi, including urinating near holy places.

The implementation of these aspects caused anxiety among some Hindus in Bali. However, others welcomed the changes, as they saw them as an opportunity to deepen their faith and strengthen their spiritual lives during the Nyepi tradition.

The Nyepi tradition is a unique cultural heritage of Bali that has been passed down from generation to generations. It is a day of silence and self-reflection for Hindus, aimed at maintaining the balance of the universe and cleaning one’s soul. Despite the changes this year, the spirit of Nyepi remains intact, highlighting the resilience and adaptability of the Hindu community in Bali.

Nyepi in Bali, also known as the Day of Silence, is a Hindu holiday celebrated in Bali, Indonesia. It is observed on the day before the Balinese New Year according to the Balinese calendar and is a public holiday on the island. During Nyepi, residents of Bali are required to follow a set of restrictions, including staying at home, not using lights or electricity, and avoiding work or travel.

One of the unique aspects of Nyepi is the Pecaruan ceremony, which takes place on the evening before Nyepi. During the ceremony, large wooden effigies, known as ogoh-ogoh, are paraded through the streets. The ogoh-ogoh represent evil spirits and are burned to symbolize their destruction.

The Day of Silence itself is observed by a complete shutdown of all activity on the island. Businesses close, vehicles are not allowed on the streets, and even the international airport in Denpasar is closed. The goal of the day of silence is to reduce the island’s carbon footprint and provide an opportunity for reflection and spiritual renewal.

Nyepi is an important cultural and religious event for the Hindu community in Bali. It provides a unique opportunity for residents and tourists alike to experience the island’s rich cultural heritage and connect with its spiritual side.

In recent years, theSouth Pole has awarded a special award to Bali for its efforts in maintaining the Nyepi tradition and promoting sustainable tourism. This recognition highlights the importance of the Day of Silence not only for the Hindu community in Bali but also for the global community as a model of sustainable tourism.

The Suparto Dilemma: A Spotlight on Yos Suprato’s Paintings

by Chief Editor December 23, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Title: Controversy Erupts as Solo Exhibit of Yos Suprapto's Exhibition and the National Gallery's Response: A Dispute Over Curatorial Influence.”>Yos Suprapto‘s Painting is Canceled at National Gallery

Article:

In a move that has sparked controversy, the solo exhibition of renowned artist Yos Suprapto has been canceled at the National Gallery in Jakarta. The cancellation has been met with a storm of criticism from various quarters, with many arguing that it undermines artistic freedom and public discourse.

The kerfuffle began when Yos Suprapto alleged that the exhibition’s curator, Suwarno Wisetrotomo, had asked him to remove five of the 30 paintings he had prepared for the show. The paintings in question were said to depict sensitive topics related to figures popular in Indonesian society.

Yos initially agreed to cover two paintings with black cloth but later refused to remove three more, leading to the exhibition’s cancellation. The gallery proceeded to turn off the lights and lock the exhibition room.

The National Gallery released a statement, blaming technical difficulties for the postponement of the "Kebangkitan: Tanah untuk Kedaulitan Pangan" exhibition, which was set to run from December 20, 2024, to January 19, 2025.

Suwarno, the exhibition’s curator, maintained that two of the paintings in question were deemed too controversial to display, as they appeared to criticize practices of power and were considered too vulgar and lacking in metaphor, contradicting the exhibition’s theme.

The cancellation of the exhibition has led to a deluge of criticism. DPP member and PDI-P fractional Commission X member Bonnie Triyana called on the National Gallery to reopen the exhibition, arguing that art should belong to the public and stimulate open discussion. He predicted that the exhibition, if reopened, would attract a large number of visitors, contributing to a healthier democracy in Indonesia.

Usman Hamid, the director of Amnesty International Indonesia, echoed these sentiments, arguing that the cancellation was a dire warning about the state of free expression in Indonesia. He stressed that artwork is a form of expression protected under human rights laws.

Todung Mulya Lubis, a senior advocate, also criticized the gallery’s decision. He affirmed that he had visited the gallery to view the exhibition personally and claimed that the gallery had asked Yos to remove five paintings that were critical of President Joko Widodo. Lubis deemed this act as censorship through art.

Former coordinating minister for politics, law, and security, Mahfud MD, also weighed in, suggesting that the gallery postponed the exhibition because Yos refused to remove five of his paintings.

The cancellation of Yos Suprapto’s solo exhibition has ignited a conversation about artistic freedom and censorship in Indonesia. As the debate continues, many hope that the National Gallery will reconsider its decision and reopen the exhibition, allowing the public to engage with and interpret Yos’s work for themselves.

PDIP Politicians Demand National Gallery Exhibit Yos Suprapto Paintings Again

by Chief Editor December 22, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Headline: PDIP‘s Bonnie Triyana Calls for Reignited ‘Yos Suprapto‘ Exhibition at Galeri Nasional Indonesia

Subhead: As the controversy surrounding the cancellation of the exhibition heats up, a prominent Indonesian MP urges the gallery to reconsider its decision.

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia — Bonnie Triyana, an influential member of the PDIP party and the Indonesian House of Representatives’ Komisi X (Commission X), has echoed the sentiments of numerous art enthusiasts and citizens when he recently demanded that the Galeri Nasional Indonesia reopen the Yos Suprapto exhibition that was previously scrapped. The exhibition, which was set to run for a month starting from December 20, 2024, was abruptly postponed due to unexplained ‘technical issues.’

In a spirited discourse held at Cikini, Jakarta, on Sunday, December 22, Bonnie, who is known for his advocacy for cultural heritage, asserted, "In my capacity as an X Commission member, I’m asking, no, pleading for them to reopen the exhibition. We, as a nation, deserve to engage openly with our artistic expressions."

Bonnie believes that by reinstating the exhibition, Galeri Nasional will foster a richer public discourse around art and its role in society. He also predicts that such a move would generate significant public interest, bolstering visitor numbers. Furthermore, Bonnie posits that this action would reinforce Indonesia’s democratic credentials, creating a more robust and cultured political climate.

The MP, who is also known for his blunt speaking style, claimed that the real reason behind the cancellation was censorship, stating, "The images are already circulating on social media. What’s the harm in displaying them in a gallery? The artists’ intent is clear. Let’s not hide behind pretense."

Regarding President Prabowo Subianto‘s possible involvement in the matter, Bonnie expressed his belief that the President, known for his appreciation of the arts and literature, might not be aware of the incident. He hinted at external influences, asserting, "Perhaps there’s more to this than meets the eye… But whatever the case, let’s not shy away from honest dialogue."

Suwarno Wisetrotomo, the exhibition’s curator, had previously issued a statement criticizing two specific artworks that he believed were overly crude in their critique of power. However, in response to the backlash following the cancellation, Galeri Nasional officially attributed the delay to unforeseen technical difficulties. In a post on their social media platforms, they apologized for any inconvenience caused, promising to work closely with Yos Suprapto to find a suitable resolution.

As the controversy continues to unfold, Indonesian art enthusiasts await the outcome, hoping that Bonnie’s impassioned plea will encourage Galeri Nasional to reconsider their stance and revive the Yos Suprapto exhibition.
