Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘Satluj’ Now Streaming Uncut on ZEE5 Global

The social drama Satluj, directed by Honey Trehan and starring Diljit Dosanjh, began streaming globally on ZEE5 Global on July 3. The film, which depicts the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, was released in its original, uncut form three years after the film first ran into trouble with India’s censor board.

How Censorship Conflicts Shape Modern Streaming Releases

The journey of Satluj highlights the growing friction between creative intent and regulatory oversight in the Indian film industry. Originally titled Ghallughara—a term referencing historical massacres of Sikhs—the film was forced into a six-month certification process by the CBFC in late 2022. According to producers RSVP and MacGuffin Pictures, the board originally mandated 21 cuts and a title change to Punjab ’95.

The production team chose to challenge these requirements in the Bombay High Court rather than compromise the film’s integrity. Director Honey Trehan stated to Variety that the team refused to endorse a “compromised version,” ultimately securing a release that retains the director’s original vision.

Did you know?

The film previously faced significant hurdles, including being withdrawn from its scheduled gala premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Sources cited by Variety at the time indicated that political factors were involved in that decision.

Why Independent Producers are Choosing Global Platforms

The shift toward ZEE5 Global for the release of Satluj underscores the role of digital platforms in hosting content that faces traditional distribution barriers. Kaveri Das, business head for Hindi content at ZEE5, noted that the film’s themes of “courage, resilience, and the fight for justice” align with the platform’s commitment to supporting content that might otherwise be suppressed.

Harish Goyal, territory head for the Americas at ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., emphasized that for South Asian audiences, cinema is a vital link to the subcontinent’s history. By bypassing theatrical gatekeepers that often demand content sanitization, producers like Ronnie Screwvala are finding that global streaming services provide the necessary “conviction” to distribute challenging narratives.

The Impact of Casting on Historical Dramas

Diljit Dosanjh’s portrayal of Jaswant Singh Khalra has been central to the film’s marketing and audience reception. Dosanjh stated that the “martyrdom and contribution to humanity” of Khalra were the primary reasons for his involvement. His commitment to the role, described by producer Ronnie Screwvala as having “honesty and depth,” is a common strategy in modern biographical cinema—using high-profile actors to bring visibility to human rights struggles that might otherwise be marginalized.
