Latvian series Nelūgtie viesi and Ķīlnieki will be available to viewers across the Baltic states on the HBO Max streaming platform, Tet reported. The move follows a six-year effort by technology company Tet and producers Lelde and Vlad Kovaļovs to create original Latvian content capable of competing in international markets.
Nelūgtie viesi arrives in October 2026
The first season of the detective series Nelūgtie viesi is scheduled to launch on HBO Max for subscribers in all Baltic countries in October 2026. The second series, Ķīlnieki, will follow with a premiere on the platform in February 2027.
Tet’s chief producer Ilze Korjusa stated that the result is the outcome of years of targeted work rather than a single meeting. Korjusa noted that the company’s goal was to create content that could compete outside Latvia, viewing this placement as a way to open doors for other original Latvian series on international platforms.
Did you know? The production of Nelūgtie viesi involved filming schedules compressed into 30 days to accommodate the availability of Latvian theater actors.
Baltic Crime facilitates international distribution
The path to HBO Max involved several years of searching for international distributors and a cooperation agreement with a firm in Great Britain. The definitive turning point occurred through a partnership with Baltic Crime, an Estonian content distribution company founded in 2025. Baltic Crime focuses on helping cinema and television content from the Baltics and Nordic countries enter the international market, according to Tet.
Producer Lelde Kovaļova said the process highlighted the scale of global competition, where local stories must compete against high-budget projects with significant promotion. Kovaļova attributed the eventual success to persistence, stating that “persistence pays off” in a market where it is uncertain if a story liked by Latvian viewers will resonate in other countries.
Production begins with 2020 partnership
The collaboration between Tet and the Kovaļovs began in 2020. At that time, the creative team proposed developing high-quality series based on original scripts with the specific long-term goal of pitching them to platforms like HBO Max or Netflix.
Ilze Korjusa said Tet was drawn to the team’s ambition and the first script for Nelūgtie viesi, which she described as an original detective story with strong characters and humor. She cited the Kovaļovs’ ability to meet deadlines and stay within a set budget as key factors in the partnership.
Production Insight: Casting for these series prioritized characters who fit the roles specifically, rather than selecting actors based on existing popularity or recognition.
Weather and production challenges test the filming process
Lelde Kovaļova identified the execution of the idea as the most daring part of the project. Production teams faced unpredictable weather and wind, which forced them to continue filming even in poor conditions, though Kovaļova noted that canceling a filming day is sometimes the most courageous decision.
The series relied on a close partnership between the producer and director Vlad Kovaļovs. In addition to directing and writing the scripts, Vlad Kovaļovs handled all post-production work.
