The Batman Part II Production Paused as Matt Reeves Steps Away

Production Status in London

Filming for the sequel had been underway in London before the studio issued its announcement. Warner Bros. and DC Studios confirmed the situation on Monday, stating that the director has the full support of the studio as he steps away from the project. While the delay has prompted questions regarding the film’s timeline, the studio has not yet indicated that the temporary absence will result in changes to the creative team.

Film Release Date Moves to February 2028

Despite the current pause, the film remains officially scheduled for release on February 18, 2028. This date follows a series of previous shifts in the schedule; the project was originally slated for an October 2, 2026 debut before moving to October 1, 2027 and eventually to its current 2028 window. Sources close to the production have noted that it is currently too early to determine if this latest interruption will necessitate further delays.

The production process for the sequel has been lengthy, with filming commencing this past June. The development phase was marked by multiple delays while Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin finalized the script. The film is considered a crown jewel of DC Studios’ slate, building on the commercial success of the 2022 original, which grossed $770.3 million globally.

Robert Pattinson Returns with New Cast Members

The sequel features the return of Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, along with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, also known as the Penguin. The franchise, which recently expanded with the TV series The Penguin, has also added several new cast members for this installment, including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Sebastian Koch.

Pattinson has previously characterized the script as an ambitious departure from the first film. It’s a real left turn from the first one, but somehow it keeps elements of the kind of feel of it, the actor noted in a recent interview. DC Studios boss James Gunn has also addressed the scope of the project, specifically denying reports that the second and third installments of the planned series would be filmed simultaneously.

Corporate Context at Warner Bros.

The pause in production coincides with a period of transition for the studio. Skydance is set to complete its takeover of DC Studios’ home Warner Bros. on Tuesday. While DC chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran are among the executives making staying on under the new ownership, other executives, including film bosses Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, are departing the company.
