Tierschutz Austria rescues 300 mice from a Vienna apartment

Tierschutz Austria has taken roughly 300 mice into its care after an emergency rescue operation at a private residence in Vienna. The organization initially expected to collect only 30 animals following a request from Volkshilfe, but responders discovered a much larger population living in unsanitary conditions.

Conditions at the Vienna residence

Upon arrival, rescue teams found the mice kept in heavily soiled terrariums without gender separation. The lack of segregation led to uncontrolled breeding, which allowed the animals to spread throughout the apartment, including inside walls, floors, ceilings, and household appliances. The environment was marked by significant waste accumulation and high levels of ammonia.

Did You Know? This is the second time in six months that Tierschutz Austria has conducted a rescue at this specific address. Approximately 2,100 mice were removed from the same apartment during the previous operation.

Medical care at Vösendorf

The rescued mice were transported to the Tierschutzhaus Vösendorf, where they are currently receiving veterinary attention. Many of the animals suffer from tumors, illnesses, and various injuries, including bite wounds. The facility is providing the necessary food and medical treatment, and some pregnant females have already given birth to litters since arriving in the protected environment.

Managing a population of this size requires significant resources, and the immediate priority remains stabilizing the health of the animals before addressing long-term housing needs.

Next steps for the rescued population

The care team is now managing the intensive task of stabilizing the population. A primary next step involves the castration of the males to prevent further uncontrolled reproduction. Following medical recovery, the organization must secure suitable enclosures that provide adequate space for the animals.
