In a significant geopolitical development, former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed a strong desire to meet with him at the earliest convenience to discuss the war in Ukraine. Trump, during a speech to his supporters in Arizona, revealed that Putin was keen on arranging a meeting as soon as possible.
"The President Putin said he wants to meet with me as soon as possible," Trump was quoted by CNBC, following his remarks at the event held on Sunday, December 22. "So, we’ll have to wait for that, but we do need to end this terrible, terrible war," the Republican added.
This development comes on the heels of Trump’s previous interactions with European leaders on the Ukraine crisis. In early December, during a visit to Paris to attend the Notre-Dame Cathedral’s reopening after a five-year restoration, Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Following that meeting, Trump had called for an "immediate ceasefire" in Ukraine.
Throughout his presidential campaign, Trump consistently maintained that he could resolve the Ukraine conflict within 24 hours if reinstated to the White House. Experts, however, caution that once Trump assumes the presidency in January 2025, he might apply pressure on Kyiv by scaling back military aid, thereby encouraging Ukrainian officials to engage in peace talks with Moscow.
Moreover, Trump has repeatedly criticized the Biden administration’s decision to allow the use of U.S.-supplied weapons deep into Russian territory.
Meanwhile, in a news conference held on December 19, Putin stated that he stands ready for a conversation and meeting with Trump at any time, but remained uncertain about when such a discussion could materialize. As the political landscape shapes up for 2025, all eyes turn towards what could potentially be a pivotal encounter between Trump and Putin.
