Urgently Addressing the Next Crisis in the Cultural Sector: A Call for Immediate Action by the Minister of Culture

Cultural Sector in Uproar: Delyan Peevski Condemns Delays in Payments and Lack of Attention from Authorities

Leading figures in Bulgaria‘s arts community have expressed outrage over delayed payments and a lack of attention from authorities, with Delyan Peevski, Chair of the Parliamentary Group of "DPS – Novo Nicholson," issuing a strongly-worded statement condemning the situation. The ministry of culture, he argues, is failing in its mission to support artists and cultural institutions.

"In the sector, we’re seeing either sheer managerial incompetence or a unwillingness to tackle the issues facing artists and cultural institutions," Peevski said in his statement, sent to the media. "We’ve secured substantial funding for the cultural sector in the 2024 budget, acknowledging its key role in our national identity and pride. Yet, we’re now witnessing theater premieres delayed due to power cuts, unheated venues, and unpaid fees and compensation."

Peevski addressed the serving minister of culture, urging prompt action to resolve the latest crisis in the sector instead of shirking responsibility. "It is unacceptable that, despite our commitment to allocating sufficient resources, theaters are still facing such challenges," he added.

The statement comes as the arts community continues to grapple with long-standing funding and recognition issues, underscoring the urgent need for action from the ministry of culture.
