Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, replaced longtime Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López with General Gustavo González López this Wednesday.
A Decade of Service
Padrino López served as Venezuela’s Defense Minister since October 2014, becoming the longest-serving minister in the country’s history. He played a key role during a brief coup attempt against Hugo Chávez in April 2002, commanding armored units in Caracas that did not join the uprising.
Under Padrino López’s tenure, and throughout Maduro’s presidency, the Venezuelan military became increasingly involved in areas beyond national security, gaining influence within the government to the point where over a third of the cabinet consisted of active or retired military personnel.
Recent Developments
Padrino López’s position came into question following an incident on January 3rd, when U.S. Special forces reportedly penetrated Fuerte Tiuna – Venezuela’s main military installation – and detained Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, without a response from Venezuelan forces.
Who is Gustavo González López?
González López, the newly appointed Defense Minister, is currently under sanctions from the United States and the European Union due to allegations of corruption and human rights violations. Prior to his appointment, he served as head of the Presidential Honor Guard and the Directorate General of Military Counterintelligence. He previously directed the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (Sebin) on two occasions, between 2014-2018 and 2019-2024.
