A family in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, is facing mounting financial hardship following a series of devastating events. Christine Brennan launched a GoFundMe campaign initially to cover medical expenses for her husband, Jason Brennan and is now seeking support to cover funeral costs after the recent loss of their daughter.
Husband’s Health Crisis
The challenges began in December 2025 when Jason Brennan contracted sepsis, a life-threatening condition, after initially experiencing strep pneumonia. According to Christine, his condition rapidly deteriorated. “We thought it was the flu at the beginning of December, and then he just started getting worse and worse — and then he started getting confused,” she told SooToday.
Jason’s illness necessitated emergency surgery in Toronto after a bacterial infection spread to his neck, spine, and heart. He is currently monitoring his heart’s electrical activity with a Holter monitor and will eventually require a pacemaker. Currently, the family is relying on Jason’s employment insurance benefits, as he is unable to return to his work as a roofer for several months.
Unexpected Loss
The family’s difficulties were compounded by tragedy last Friday with the death of their 23-year-old daughter, Nicole Brennan, as a result of a drug overdose. Christine shared that Nicole was six months pregnant at the time of her death.
The GoFundMe campaign now aims to assist with the costs associated with Nicole’s funeral. As of today, the campaign has raised over $2,200 towards a goal of $11,000 since its launch in January.
“We’re grateful — so grateful for what people have given us, and it has helped,” Christine said. “We just need more support.”
