A 34-year-old woman drove a pickup truck onto a youth soccer field at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, on October 17, 2026, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, police said. Eleven other people were injured in the afternoon incident, which remains under active investigation.

Tragedy Strikes Afternoon Youth Soccer Games at Stryker Sports Complex

What began as a sunny Saturday afternoon of youth sports in Wichita ended in sudden panic when a black pickup truck drove across the grounds of the Stryker Sports Complex. Sedgwick County emergency dispatchers received multiple calls around 3:25 p.m. local time reporting that a vehicle had entered the playing fields and struck people, according to the Wichita Police Department.

Vanessa Trammell was watching her 13-year-old son play on a neighboring field when the vehicle crossed into the area. She told CNN, describing an atmosphere of panic as bystanders realized people were being hit.

Fatalities, Hospitalizations, and the Response from Wichita First Responders

First responders arrived to find two victims pronounced dead on the field: a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man. Both victims were from the city of McPherson, Kansas, and police confirmed they were not related to one another.

Eleven other individuals sustained injuries ranging from minor bruises to extremely severe trauma. Five of the injured were children ranging in age from 5 to 9 years old, while five adult victims were between 28 and 68 years old. An additional 61-year-old woman was hospitalized for a non-traumatic medical issue.

Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses told reporters that emergency crews and law enforcement officers from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, and nearby Bel Aire converged on the scene. Before professional rescue units reached the victims, community members and bystanders sprang into action to render lifesaving medical aid.

The community was very impressive when our firefighters arrived. They didn’t begin patient care, they continued patient care, taking charge of what the community had already begun providing to those who were injured.

Police Custody and the Ongoing Investigation into the Driver

Authorities took the driver—identified as a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas—into custody at the scene. Investigators confirmed she has been cooperative up to this point in the investigation.

Two juveniles were inside the pickup truck with the driver when the incident occurred. Police established that the woman had a child participating in a soccer game at the complex that afternoon, though that child was playing on a different field than the one where the crash took place.

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan emphasized that while investigators understand the sequence of events, the underlying cause remains unestablished. We know what happened, but now we’re working very hard to find out why it happened, Sullivan told reporters, noting that officials have not yet determined whether the crash was intentional.

Community Fallout, Event Cancellations, and Public Appeals

In the wake of the tragedy, city and state leaders issued public statements expressing sorrow and extending condolences to the affected families. Wichita Mayor Lily Wu addressed reporters during a Saturday evening news conference.

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly announced she was closely monitoring the situation, offered state resources to assist the city, and expressed gratitude to the first responders at the scene. The Stryker Sports Complex suspended all scheduled events until further notice. Additionally, the Kansas State High School Activities Association suspended its flag football state championship matches and all other scheduled games through the weekend.

Investigators have interviewed more than 30 witnesses and are reviewing photographs and video footage. The Wichita Police Department asked anyone who captured video of the incident to submit digital files through its online community evidence portal.
