Spider-Man on Xbox: From “Never” to “Not Likely” – What’s Changed?

Insomniac Games recently addressed the long-standing question of whether its popular Spider-Man titles will ever appear on Xbox consoles. The answer, delivered via X (formerly Twitter), was a curt “Not likely.” However, the history of platform exclusivity and evolving console landscapes suggests the situation is far from settled.

A History of Shifting Statements

This isn’t the first time Insomniac has dismissed the possibility of Spider-Man on Xbox. Back in 2017, the studio bluntly stated the games would “never” come to Xbox or PC. That statement proved inaccurate, as the entire Spider-Man trilogy is now available on PC via Steam. This track record highlights the fluidity of platform strategies and the potential for public statements to become outdated.

Helldivers 2: A Recent Precedent

The recent release of Helldivers 2 further complicates the narrative. Initially, the game’s developer, Arrowhead, suggested an Xbox release was improbable, dependent on negotiations between Sony and Microsoft. Sony pushed for the port and Helldivers 2 is now available on Xbox. This demonstrates that even seemingly firm stances can be reversed, particularly when market opportunities arise.

The Next-Gen Xbox: A Potential Game Changer

The future of Xbox hardware could fundamentally alter the exclusivity debate. Reports indicate the next generation of Xbox, slated for release in 2027, will be built much closer to a standard Windows PC. This shift has significant implications for game availability.

The Rise of the Xbox PC

If the next Xbox functions more like a PC, it could open the door to third-party storefronts like Steam and the Epic Games Store. Epic Games has already expressed interest in bringing its store to the next-gen Xbox. This would mean that PlayStation titles already available on PC – including the Spider-Man games – could potentially be accessible on Xbox without direct Sony porting efforts.

Currently, PlayStation titles available on PC include Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West, God of War, God of War Ragnarök, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part I, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Days Gone, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, Until Dawn, Detroit: Become Human, Heavy Rain, and Beyond: Two Souls.

Sony’s Shifting Strategy

Sony’s decision to release Marathon day and date on Xbox suggests a potential shift in strategy. The success of Helldivers 2 may also encourage Sony to consider further capitalizing on the Xbox ecosystem with legacy titles like Spider-Man.
