The incident, which occurred around 01:30 AM on January 1, has left the local community in shock and underscored the grave dangers of firing weapons into the air during festive celebrations.
CBS News reported that Yanelis was with her family, setting off fireworks in a residential area near the intersection of NW 27 Avenue and NW 21 Terrace, when she suddenly collapsed after being hit in the back of the head by a bullet. Her frantic family attempted to rush her to the hospital in their vehicle while contacting emergency services. They were reportedly intercepted by personnel from Hialeah Fire Rescue on Palm Avenue and W 3 Street, who transported Yanelis to the Ryder Trauma Center, where she was unfortunate declared deceased.
Yanelis’ grandfather, Ramón Valdizol, shared his heartache with CBS News, saying, "Every time I went to her house, she was always happy to see me, and now I can’t stand to go there and not see her."
Investigators believe the fatal shot was fired by someone celebrating the new year by shooting into the air, a perilous and recurring practice during festivities, particularly in South Florida. Authorities have repeatedly warned about the mortal risks of this behavior. "We’ve spoken time and time again every New Year’s about the fact that what goes up, comes down," stated detective Andre Martin to CBS News. "This is a tragic example of the danger of indiscriminately firing a weapon into the air."
Carlos Gutiérrez, a family member, expressed outrage at the reckless act, saying, "Shooting into the sky has consequences. Who paid? A child. What fault did the child have? None," he stated during an interview. "It’s a huge loss and a tragedy that a child has lost her life over this."

The family is devastated, with Yanelis having just celebrated her 10th birthday on December 26, transforming what should have been a moment of joy into an unimaginable nightmare. Aside from arranging her funeral, her loved ones now face the arduous task of explaining her absence to her seven-year-old brother.
Valdzol pleaded with residents to reflect and advocate for stricter measures to prevent such tragedies from recurring. "It’s very painful to lose a family member because we’ll never see them again," he added, his voice breaking with emotion, as reported by NBC News.
Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward, offering a $5,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest. A community fundraising page has also been launched to support the family with funeral expenses.
