Italian Journalist Detained in Iran; Italy Demands Immediate Release
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Iranian ambassador, urging the immediate release of journalist Cecilia Sala. The 29-year-old was arrested on December 19 in Tehran for allegedly violating the country’s strict Islamic laws while creating a reportage.
Sala, a podcast creator for Chora Media and writer for the newspaper Il Foglio, was in Iran to produce reports. With a valid journalist visa, she was apprehended during preparations for her return to Italy. Italian media reports suggest she is being held in the notorious Evin Prison, known for its harsh conditions, with no contact with the outside world and bruised by severe cold and constant lighting.
Earlier speculation linked Sala’s arrest to Italy’s detention, at the U.S.’s request, of an Iranian man accused of supplying drone components used in a 2023 attack in Jordan that killed three American service members. Iran dismisses the charges as unjust and demands the Italian’s immediate release, arguing that his detention violates international laws. Iranian authorities also assert that Sala is being treated well in prison.
Hostage Diplomacy
Iran’s practice of detaining foreigners and using them as bargaining chips, known as ‘hostage diplomacy,’ is not uncommon. In June 2022, two Swedish citizens imprisoned in Iran were exchanged for an Iranian convicted of murders in Sweden.
As international pressure mounts for Sala’s release, diplomats are engaged in negotiations to resolve the sensitive situation. Italy has shown resolve in securing its citizen’s freedom while balancing geopolitical factors at play.
