Ukraine Extends Deadlines for Military Personnel to Return from Leave, Avoiding Penalties

Ukraine’s Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has voted to extend deadlines for military personnel to return from their vacations and service in the Joint Forces Operation (JFO) zone, avoiding potential disciplinary action. The new deadline is set for March 1, 2025.

The decision, passed on Tuesday, affects around 20 brigades that had previously indicated they would not return to their duties. This move aims to prevent a wave of desertions and maintain the operational capacity of Ukraine’s armed forces.

The extension applies to both service members who were on vacation and those who were serving in the JFO zone. The latter group is now given more time to return from their service in the conflict area.

Previously, the deadline for voluntary return was set for March 1, 2024. The extension was requested by the Ministry of Defense to ensure a smooth transition and prevent a sudden surge of personnel returning at the last minute.

This development comes as Ukraine continues to focus on its military reform and modernization efforts, aiming to strengthen its defenses in the face of ongoing tensions. The extended deadline is seen as a pragmatic approach to manage the return of service members and maintain operational readiness.
