South Wairarapa ratepayers face a bill of more than $3300 following the illegal dumping of 20 tonnes of construction waste at the intersection of Hinekura Rd and Longbush Rd. South Wairarapa District Council Infrastructure Committee chair Aidan Ellims confirmed the cleanup costs and stated the council is now pursuing investigations to hold the perpetrators accountable.
What happened at the Hinekura Rd and Longbush Rd site?
Ten tonnes of asphalt and 10 tonnes of construction spoil were discovered dumped at the intersection of Hinekura Rd and Longbush Rd recently. According to a South Wairarapa District Council spokesperson, this is not an isolated incident, as similar construction waste has been abandoned in the public road reserve previously. The site has since been cleared, and the council has closed off access to the area to prevent further dumping. Signage has been installed at the location warning that offenders could face prosecution and fines of up to $5000.
Why does illegal dumping matter for the community?
Aidan Ellims, chair of the council’s Infrastructure Committee, stated that illegal dumping and antisocial behavior impose significant costs on the South Wairarapa community. These costs extend beyond the $3300 cleanup bill, encompassing environmental harm, safety risks, and the degradation of local ecosystems and waterways. The financial burden is substantial when compared to past incidents; in 2025, the council spent $145,000 to clean up an illegal dump site along Cape Palliser Rd. Ellims noted that the dumped bitumen is recyclable and could have been safely disposed of at approved contractor sites throughout the Wairarapa.
What happens next for the investigation?
The South Wairarapa District Council has reported the dumping to the police and is implementing additional measures to identify those responsible. While the council continues to investigate, they have asked the public to assist by reporting suspicious vehicles or trucks.
