The Midsummer Classic returns to Philadelphia for its 96th edition, with the American League and National League preparing to face off in a game that serves as a centerpiece for the nation’s Semiquincentennial celebration. The rosters feature a mix of veteran talent and emerging stars, with 11 participants under the age of 25. The host Philadelphia Phillies lead all teams with six All-Star representatives.

The starting pitchers, announced on Sunday, highlight the strength of the respective rotations. The American League will start Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Dylan Cease. Cease will become just the third pitcher in Blue Jays history to earn the starting nod, following franchise icons Halladay in 2009 and Dave Stieb in 1983 and 1984. The National League counters with Philadelphia Phillies lefty Cristopher Sánchez. Sánchez, speaking through an interpreter, expressed his excitement about starting the game in his home ballpark, stating, This feels really special. Really exciting. Even moreso being here at home. So I’m just super excited.

The batting orders reflect both fan voting and strategic choices by the managers. Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout is set to lead off for the American League in his 12th All-Star appearance, the most of any 2026 participant. Trout, who is from nearby Millville, New Jersey, noted the personal significance of the location. “It was definitely on my list when it came out, so it’s pretty cool,” Trout said. “Just the kids, friends, family. It just means a lot.” He added, “I love playing in it, but it’s an experience for my kids and family. It’s going to be good to be able to stay at my house and enjoy a few days.”

For the National League, Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber will lead off. Schwarber has been a crucial piece of a Phillies lineup that has compiled a 54-43 record this season. He currently leads the majors with 32 home runs and has racked up nine doubles, 59 walks, and 59 RBI with a .927 OPS. Schwarber is also set to compete in the Home Run Derby.

Managerial Perspectives and Roster Adjustments

The rosters have seen several adjustments due to injuries and eligibility. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (TOR) was elected as the AL’s starting first baseman but will not play. Nick Kurtz (ATH) was in line to replace Guerrero but suffered a thumb strain. Additionally, Aaron Judge (NYY) and Byron Buxton (MIN) were elected as starting outfielders for the AL but will not play due to injury. For the National League, Shohei Ohtani (LAD) was elected as the starting designated hitter but is sidelined due to injury. These absences have shifted the starting rosters, with Ozzie Albies and Drake Baldwin earning places as starters.

The American League lineup behind Cease includes: CF Mike Trout, DH Yordan Alvarez, C Shea Langeliers, 3B Junior Caminero, SS Bobby Witt Jr., RF Cody Bellinger, 1B Ben Rice, LF Riley Greene, and 2B Ernie Clement. The National League lineup, managed by Dave Roberts—who is serving in his fifth All-Star Game as manager—features Baldwin as the battery mate to Sánchez, with Albies batting sixth and Baldwin batting ninth.

Phillies superstar Bryce Harper spoke to the significance of the event being hosted in Philadelphia, noting the intensity of the local fan base. “Philly’s a great place, and it’s a lot of fun to be here,” Harper said. “It’s a place not many guys want to come to, because the fans are tough and they’re all over you. But they’re going to see how much love they get from the fans, too, and I hope they enjoy that.”

Exhibition Format

While the starting lineups are set, they are largely a formality. With every team having at least one representative, managers typically make substitutions quickly, aiming to work most players in for at least one defensive inning or at-bat. The only exception to that might be for the Phillies players, given that the game is being held at Citizens Bank Park.
