The Television Academy unveiled the 2026 Emmy nominations on Wednesday, July 8, marking the start of the final sprint to the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards. Nominees were announced at the Saban Media Center in North Hollywood, with the awards ceremony scheduled for September 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Early Reveals: Variety and Reality Categories
In a departure from the full rollout, two major categories were revealed early on NBC’s Today show. According to Variety, the Television Academy has merged scripted variety and talk series into a single "outstanding variety series" field.
The nominees for the newly consolidated Outstanding Variety Series category include:
- The Daily Show
- Jimmy Kimmel Live!
- Last Week Tonight With John Oliver
- The Late Show With Stephen Colbert
- Saturday Night Live
The reality competition program field features Dancing With the Stars, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Survivor, Top Chef, and The Traitors.
Top Contenders and Potential Records
Expectations are high for several returning heavyweights. HBO Max’s medical drama The Pitt, which dominated last year's ceremony, is widely considered a frontrunner for another major showing.
However, Apple TV+ series Pluribus, created by Vince Gilligan, poses a significant threat to The Pitt‘s nomination count. Analysts suggest it has a legitimate chance to challenge the 32-year-old record for most nominations for a debut season—a mark set by NYPD Blue with 26 nominations in 1994.
A Milestone Hosting Gig and Rule Changes
Mariska Hargitay, the star of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, will host the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards. She is the first woman to host the ceremony in 15 years.
The Academy also implemented structural changes for this cycle, including the introduction of the Legacy Award, intended to honor programs that have made a “profound and lasting impact” on culture. Furthermore, the variety series category has been designated an “area award,” meaning that rather than competing against one another, nominees are evaluated against a 90% voter approval threshold. Consequently, multiple winners could emerge from a single category.
Comedy Categories and the ‘Shrinking’ Buzz
In the comedy race, Hacks enters its fifth and final season with significant momentum. If nominated, Ford would be competing for his first competitive award at a major ceremony.

The 2026 Emmy Awards eligibility period covers programs that aired between June 1, 2025, and May 31, 2026.
