For Argentines eager to vacation in Brazil, one crucial prerequisite is obtaining the yellow fever vaccine, as it’s mandatory for crossing the border. In the Argentine province of San Juan, the pace of yellow fever vaccinations has notably accelerated in recent weeks, with nearly 900 doses administered in just a month, according to Fernanda Paredes, the province’s immunization chief.
Vaccine Shortage Looms as Demand Spike Eclipses Supply
In San Juan, vaccines are administered at the Hospital Rawson on Tuesdays, the Provincial Vaccination Center on Wednesdays, and the Hospital Marcial Quiroga on Thursdays. Weekly inoculation figures range from 40 to 60 at each hospital, while the vaccination center has surpassed 100 doses in a week. Paredes revealed that a record 150 yellow fever vaccinations were administered on a single day—January 8—at the vaccination center, exceeding the monthly average of 80 doses.
However, the surge in demand has led to a critical shortage of vaccines in San Juan, with only 10 doses remaining at the Hospital Marcial Quiroga. Paredes assures that a new supply request has been submitted and is currently under audit, although the national government is responsible for replenishing provincial vaccine stocks.

With the Argentine peso gaining traction and domestic inflation in USD rising, Argentines are turning to neighboring countries such as Chile and Brazil for affordable holiday experiences.
