A Calculated Decision
Faced with the possibility of losing her life, according to Hernández, Coronel made a calculated move: she surrendered to U.S. authorities in 2021. The journalist, who authored "Emma y las otras señoras del narco," revealed that Coronel’s decision was not impulsive but a strategic choice.
"She surrendered because she feared for her life," says Hernández. "She had a dispute with Los Chapitos over properties of the cartel that she wanted to keep. In the end, she didn’t. She saw it as a way out of that world."
A New Life, A Familiar Past
Coronel’s cooperation with U.S. authorities resulted in a reduced sentence of two years and seven months. She was released in September 2023. Now, she seems to be reinventing herself as a public figure, participating in fashion events and other activities. However, Hernández warns that using Coronel’s image sends a dangerous message.
"Emma has already paid for her crimes, but she’s not a role model," says Hernández. "It’s risky for brands to use her image; they risk promoting a form of criminal apologia."
