Discovering Alliance of Tea & Coffee Against Cancer: A Global Study Offers Hope
Regular consumption of coffee and tea can boost your health and combat common cancers, according to a global study conducted by the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology Consortium. The study, which analyzed data from over 9,500 cancer patients and approximately 15,000 healthy volunteers, found significant associations between habitual intake of coffee and tea and the reduced risk of head and neck, oral cavity, and throat cancers.
Coffee: A Potent Ally Against Cancer
- Four cups of caffeinated coffee daily may reduce the risk of head and neck cancers by 17%.
- It can also decrease the risk of oral cavity cancer by 30% and throat cancer by 22%.
- As few as three to four cups of decaffeinated coffee daily can reduce the risk of oral cavity cancer by 25%.
- Caffeinated coffee consumption may lower the risk of hypopharyngeal cancer (lower throat) by up to 41%.
Tea: A Double-Edged Sword
Tea consumption also demonstrates beneficial effects, with variations in quantity presenting distinct impacts:
- One cup of tea daily can reduce the risk of head and neck cancers, particularly hypopharyngeal cancer, by up to 27%.
- However, excessive tea consumption (more than one cup daily) may increase the risk of laryngeal cancer by 38%.
Moderation is Key
While these findings suggest that coffee and tea can play a beneficial role in cancer prevention, researchers emphasize the need to consume both beverages in moderation and as part of a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.
“These results highlight the need for further research to better understand the role of coffee and tea in reducing cancer risks.” – Yuan-Chin Amy Lee, senior researcher at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. She advises limiting the addition of sugar or sweeteners to both beverages.
