Law enforcement officers in Ambon, Maluku, have found themselves in hot water after a series of incidents that have drawn public outrage and sparked investigations. In an unusual turn of events, police officers have been on the receiving end of disciplinary action, including detentions and demotions, following allegations of misconduct and brutality against civilians.
In one of the most talked-about cases, a man was brutally thrown to the ground by police officers in the middle of a bustling street. The victim was later revealed to be an active member of Ansor, a youth wing of Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization. The incident, which was caught on camera, has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for justice. The police have since identified the officers involved and launched an investigation.
The harsh treatment of civilians by law enforcement officers in Ambon doesn’t stop there. Reports have emerged of a police chief being stripped of his position following accusations that he physically assaulted a driver, who also happens to be a member of the local parliament.
