Health insurance membership numbers in Ireland have declined for the first time in six years, according to the latest quarterly report from the Health Insurance Authority (HIA).
HIA Quarterly Report Highlights Market Slowdown
Growth in the Irish health insurance market has slowed to its weakest level in a decade, the HIA reported. Despite this dip, the market remains stable with over 2.5 million people holding health insurance at the end of June. According to HIA data, quarter two historically records the weakest growth of the year. However, the latest figures reflect a broader contraction in membership ahead of further price increases scheduled by VHI and Laya Healthcare.
Affordability Challenges and Market Saturation
Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, HIA CEO Mr Lee stated that affordability is a primary issue driving the drop in sign-ups. “It’s not going to grow forever. Also, affordability is definitely a challenge from the research that we have conducted,” Mr Lee said. He noted that the market may have reached a saturation point with roughly half the country holding private health policies. Additionally, Mr Lee pointed to the reduced availability of private maternity care as a potential factor influencing consumer decisions.
Pro Tip: Review your renewal letter carefully. As Sláintecare reforms roll out across the public system, some private health policies heavily oriented toward public hospitals may no longer offer the best value for your needs.
Reviewing Plan Structures and Public Hospital Orientation
The HIA plans to examine the structure of specific health insurance plans that lean heavily toward public hospital treatment, noting they are becoming less relevant over time. “Some people could be on plans that are very public hospital orientated and they need to look at when they get the renewal letter, do they have the right cover for their needs and do they have the right balance of private and public,” Mr Lee explained. The watchdog intends to propose legislative amendments to support policies aligned with modern healthcare delivery under Sláintecare.
Did You Know? Over 2.5 million people held health insurance policies in Ireland at the end of June, representing roughly half of the country’s total population.
