UPDATE: Driver Arrested; B9 Reopened After Severe Crash at Bienwald Border Control Post

At approximately 11:43 PM on December 23rd, a serious collision occurred at the German-French border control post Bienwald on the B9 highway. A fully loaded tractor-trailer veered into the control post, causing significant damage.

Multiple structures were damaged, including warning beacons, a light mast, traffic signs, concrete blocks, three office containers, and two police service vehicles. Both the tractor-trailer and the control post sustained substantial damage, with estimated repairs reaching around 400,000 euros.

Remarkably, during the incident, two police agents inside one of the containers escaped with minor injuries. The truck driver was found to be intoxicated, with a voluntary alcohol test revealing a blood alcohol level exceeding 1.8 promille. A blood test was ordered by the duty magistrate, and the driver’s license was seized pending further investigation.

All injured, including the driver and police agents, received initial treatment at the scene and were later transported to a hospital for further medical care. The B9 highway, coming from France, remained closed for several hours due to cleanup operations, but traffic heading towards France was able to continue unaffected. The following morning, the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) dismantled the damaged control post, reopening the highway for all traffic.
