Hawaii Wheelwell Fire Leaves Thousands Without Power
Thousands of residents in Hawaii are without power after a dramatic fire in a wheelwell at the Hawaiian Electric Company’s Honouliuli Power Plant. The incident, which occurred late yesterday afternoon, has left the entire island of Oahu with fluctuating or no power supply thereby affecting over 82,000 customers.
According to reports, a large fire engulfed the wheelwell, causing significant damage to the plant’s equipment. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but authorities are treating it as an electrical failure. Fire services swiftly responded to the incident, managing to contain the flames within an hour.
The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA) has advised residents to stay indoors and use emergency lights sparingly to preserve battery life. HECO has assured the public that they are working tirelessly to restore power as quickly as possible, with estimates suggesting it could take up to 24 hours to resolve the issue.
In the meantime, various public facilities have been opened as cooling stations to assist residents during this hot and humid period. The plant fire also caused temporary disruptions to the island’s water supply, with some areas currently experiencing reduced pressure.
