A shocking discovery was made at Kahului Airport in Maui, Hawaii, on Tuesday when a human body was found in the main landing gear of a United Airlines plane. The Boeing 787-10 aircraft had departed from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport on Christmas Eve.
According to CBS News, the body was discovered in the landing gear compartment after the plane’s arrival. A spokesperson for the airline confirmed that the area is only accessible from outside the aircraft, raising questions about how and when the individual gained access to the space.
United Airlines stated that it is working closely with authorities to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident. In a statement, the airline said, "United is cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation."
The Maui Police Department has initiated an investigation but has not released further details at this time. Fox News reports that it is still unclear how the person accessed the landing gear compartment.
The victim’s identity and the circumstances leading up to the incident remain unknown. ABC News and other outlets remind readers that these areas within aircraft are not designed for human occupation and pose serious hazards, including extremely low oxygen levels and temperatures near -54°C.
The incident has caused widespread shock, both in Hawaii and internationally, given the flight route and the timing, which occurred during one of the busiest travel periods of the year due to the winter holidays. According to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), approximately 119 million people in the U.S. have traveled during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday season, with around 54 million using airplanes as their mode of transportation.
