Title: Tragic Duvernary Fire in Sneek Claims Numerous Lives; Suspect Arrested
In a heartbreaking turn of events, a blaze engulfing a dovecote in Sneek has resulted in the deaths of tens of racing pigeons, and the surviving birds are unlikely to pull through. This incident adds to a growing list of mishaps plaguing the Friesland pigeon fancying community in recent years.
Disturbing footage from the scene captures a juvenile suspect scaling the fence of the pigeon loft on Johan Willem Frisostraat, igniting an accelerant, and hurling the flames into the structure. Within moments, the building was ablaze.
The arson occurred late Christmas Eve into the early hours of Boxing Day, around midnight. "He broke open the loft and then set it ablaze using a chemical accelerant and a paper wick," recounted Pascal Poelstra, one of the three stewards behind the duvernary association Scholten Baggel Poelstra.
Poelstra expressed profound grief at the loss, stating, "All the pigeons are basically dead. It’s incomprehensible." The suspect, a local youth, was apprehended shortly after the incident.
Authorities implore anyone with information about the crime or any other suspicious activities involving local pigeon lofts to come forward and assist in their ongoing investigation into this tragic incident and others plaguing the Friesland community.
