Five Journalists Killed in Northern Iraqi Airstrike

At least five journalists have been killed in an airstrike near Mosul, Iraq. The air raid, reportedly carried out by Israeli drones, has once again put the safety of journalists in conflict zones under scrutiny.

The attack took place in the village of Bardiya, approximately 35 kilometers south of Mosul, on Sunday afternoon. The targeted area is known for its significant Kurdish population and has seen several clashes between Kurdish forces and the Iraqi military in recent weeks.

According to local sources, the journalists were gathered at a compound where Kurdish officials were holding a meeting when the drone strike occurred. The Kurdish Regional Government’s (KRG) interior ministry confirmed the deaths and strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a "barbaric and deliberate targeting of journalists."

The identities of the deceased have been confirmed as:

  1. Abdulrahman Rahim, a correspondent for the Kurdish news agency Rudaw.
  2. Shifa Garden, a reporter for the KRG-affiliated channel Kurdistan 24.
  3. Taherсалтаn Abdullah, a photographer for the independent Kurdish news outlet Metrog sterben.
  4. estudios Fremanthe correspondent for the Kurdish newspaper Nalia.
  5. Ali Almamlouk, a photojournalist working with several local news outlets.

The Iraqi military has denied involvement in the airstrike, and the Israeli government has not yet responded to requests for comment. However, Israeli drones have been known to operate in the region, leading many to speculate that Israel may be behind the attack.

The incident has sparked outrage among international media outlets and press freedom organizations. They have called for an immediate investigation and expressed concerns over the growing risks faced by journalists covering conflicts. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 27 journalists have been killed in Iraq since 2019.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has condemned the attack, with spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stating, "Journalists must be protected, not targeted, in conflict zones. Those responsible for this heinous act must be brought to justice."

This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the crucial role journalists play in bringing the truth to light, often at great personal risk, and the urgent need for their protection in war-torn regions.
