Overnight Rescue Operation: Bus with 50 Passengers Stalled Near Veliko Tarnovo
In a dramatic overnight rescue operation, a bus carrying 50 passengers was successfully extracted from a precarious position near Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, after getting stranded in heavy snow. The incident, which unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday, highlighted the challenges posed by the ongoing snowstorm in the region.
The bus, operated by Bulgarian Railway Company (BDZ), was traveling from Sofia to Ruse when it became stuck in a deep ditch on the side of the road. The passengers, many of whom were returning home for the holidays, spent several hours in the freezing cold before rescue teams could reach them.
Local emergency services, along with barrage teams from the Regional Distribution Company (RDZ), worked tirelessly through the night to free the bus and ensure the safety of the passengers. Using specialized heavy machinery, they were able to safely tow the bus out of the ditch and back onto the road.
"Operations like this are always challenging, but the coordination and quick response of the emergency services and barrage teams made all the difference," said a spokesperson for RDS. "The safety of the passengers was our top priority."
While no serious injuries were reported, several passengers were treated for minor hypothermia and shock. They were taken to Veliko Tarnovo Hospital for further observation and care.
Meanwhile, the severe weather conditions continue to cause disruptions across Western and Central Bulgaria. Road closures and delays are reported on major routes, with traffic largely reduced to one lane due to snow and ice.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel until the weather improves. In the meantime, ongoing clearing and de-icing operations are underway to ensure the safety of motorists and road users.
As the clean-up continues, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness and responsive emergency services in mitigating the risks posed by severe weather conditions. The passengers on the stranded bus, while no doubt relieved to be safe, will be unlikely to forget this chilling experience anytime soon.
