Heavy Snowfall and Strong Winds Expected Today; Weekend Outlook
Today is set to be predominantly cloudy with snowfall expected to resume after midday, particularly in mountainous regions, the Forecarpathians, and the Ludogorie. Moderate to strong winds from the north-northeast will bring in cold air, with maximum temperatures ranging from 0°C to 5°C, and around 2°C in Sofia, according to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH).
The Black Sea region will experience cloudy and windy conditions, with moderate to strong winds from the north-northeast and snowfall expected after midday. Maximum temperatures will range from 2°C to 4°C, with sea water temperatures between 10°C and 12°C. The sea will be moderately rough, with wave heights of 3-4 meters.
In the mountains, expect cloudy, foggy, and windy conditions with snowfall. Strong, gusty winds from the north-northeast will form new snow cover and create conditions for blizzards, with snowdrifts expected in passes. At 1200 meters, the maximum temperature will be around -2°C, and at 2000 meters, around -7°C.
On Saturday, snowfall will cease everywhere, latest in southeastern regions. Cloud cover will break up from the west, but significant cloudiness will still prevail over most of the country.
On Sunday, cloud breakup and reduction will continue. Winds in Western and Central Bulgaria will subside, while in Eastern Bulgaria, moderate northerly winds will persist. Morning temperatures will significantly drop, with minimums between -10°C and -5°C, slightly higher along the Black Sea coast, and maximums between -2°C and 3°C.
