Majority Backs Banning Private Fireworks on New Year’s Eve
A recent survey conducted by Norstat on behalf of Norway’s largest organisation for engineers and technologists, NITO, has found that 72% of respondents are either entirely or somewhat in favor of banning private fireworks on New Year’s Eve.
"Nearly three out of four people support this measure," said Kjetil Lein, president of NITO. "Many of our members work in emergency services across the country, and they’re often called out to firework-related incidents and accidents each New Year’s Eve. We prioritize people’s health and safety above all else."
The survey also revealed that participants prefer municipal drone fireworks or laser shows over traditional fireworks. This year, Oslo municipality is organizing just that – a laser light show instead of regular fireworks, citing safety, environmental, and animal welfare concerns.
"Laser shows are safer, more environmentally friendly, and kinder to animals," Lein added. "We believe this is a step in the right direction."
