Brabant residents woke up to a blanket of thick fog on Saturday morning, with visibility dropping to less than 200 meters in some areas. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) issued a fog warning, advising residents to take extra care on the road.
The dense fog, characterized by low visibility and a yellow mist, stretched across the province, leading authorities to implement a ‘code geel’ (code yellow) alerts. This warning system is used to indicate severe weather conditions that may impact daily activities.
In response to the low visibility, Rijkswaterstaat recalled ships in the area to return to the harbor in Harlingen. This safety measure was taken to prevent any navigational mishaps due to the limited visibility caused by the fog.
"Drivers should reduce their speed, use their headlights, and keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead," advised the Dutch Police, as they cautioned drivers to be extra vigilant during the foggy conditions.
Earlier in the day, the KNMI had issued a warning that the dense fog was expected to persist until midday. Fortunately, by the afternoon, the fog began to lift, and visibility returned to normal levels.
The ‘code geel’ alert serves as a reminder that while fog can be a captivating natural phenomenon, it can also pose significant safety risks. Residents are urged to remain aware of changing weather conditions and adapt their activities accordingly.
