COVID-19 Remains Endemic in Colombia: INS Reports 26,275 Cases and 355 Deaths in 2024
Colombia’s Institute of Health (INS) has released its latest report on COVID-19, highlighting that the disease remains endemic in the country, with cases still being reported. As of December 2024, a total of 26,275 cases have been recorded, with 355 fatalities, according to the date of symptom onset.
The INS boletín epidemiológico reveals that the mortality rate stands at 0.68 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Shockingly, adults aged 60 and above account for a staggering 78.3% of all COVID-19 deaths in Colombia.
The INS also warns of ongoing investigations into the long-term effects and potential exacerbation of other health conditions due to COVID-19.
In encouraging news, there has been a significant decrease of 91.8% in cases compared to the same period in 2023. Between December 15 and 21, 2024, a total of 27 cases were confirmed nationwide, with 59.3% (16 cases) emerging in the last week.
Bogotá, Atlántico, Cali, Barranquilla, Bolívar, Nariño, Quindío, Santander, Tolima, Valle del Cauca, Meta, and Cundinamarca accounted for 70.4% of the most recent lab-confirmed cases.
During the current epidemiological period (weeks 48 to 51 of 2024), 93 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in 18 departments and districts, affecting 31 municipalities. The national incidence rate stood at 0.18 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with no significant changes at the departmental and district levels compared to the previous period.
Notably, there has been a significant increase in cases in San Francisco (Antioquia), La Capilla and Moniquirá (Boyacá), Guaduas, Puerto Salgar and Sibaté (Cundinamarca), Fresno and San Antonio (Tolima).
