EPS Invites DMK Allies While Criticizing Vijay’s TVK

AIADMK general secretary and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami challenged the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Tuesday to join his party in forming an electoral alliance against Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam, setting off a sharp political confrontation in Chennai.

Political Alliances and Legislative Tensions in Tamil Nadu

Speaking to journalists in Chennai on Tuesday, Palaniswami addressed reporters regarding potential coalition talks, stating that his party welcomes any group willing to join them against TVK. Overtures for such an alignment have lingered since the Assembly results earlier this year, which also saw long-term allies DMK and Congress split, with Congress joining Vijay to form the government in the state. Meanwhile, the AIADMK has faced internal fractures, with six of its MLAs joining Vijay’s party and the remaining legislators dividing into two factions.

In June, DMK organising secretary R.S. Bharathi dismissed any current talks between the AIADMK and his party regarding an alliance, though he maintained there would be nothing wrong with the two parties joining hands in the future. The political landscape shifted further when the AIADMK and BJP announced an alliance on Friday for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirming that Palaniswami would lead the National Democratic Alliance in the state.

Assembly Disruptions and Opposition Criticisms

Palaniswami’s remarks coincided with fresh disruptions inside the Assembly, where DMK legislators staged a sit-in outside the Speaker’s chamber. The protest erupted over comments made by Vijay during Monday’s proceedings, which affected House business and ultimately led the Speaker to instruct marshals to remove DMK lawmakers. According to ANI, Palaniswami accused the Vijay administration of failing to address core public concerns, including corruption, inflation, law and order, drug abuse, and farmers’ issues.

The former Chief Minister alleged that corruption has multiplied under the current administration, highlighting a massive scam involving FQL funds where lakhs of people lost money to a private company without government intervention. He also criticized the government’s handling of drug culture and urban administration portfolios, arguing that Chief Minister Vijay failed to address the House directly on key responsibilities. These developments follow heated exchanges on Monday, when Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin walked out after not being immediately allowed to respond to Vijay’s references to Enforcement Directorate material, the Sarkaria Commission, and alleged corruption during earlier DMK regimes.
