A remote area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been grappling with a mysterious illness that has gripped the world’s attention. The World Health Organization (WHO), after exhaustive lab testing, has confirmed that the illness is a combination of seasonal respiratory viruses and malaria, exacerbated by malnutrition.
Both WHO and local doctors in Kinshasa initially ruled out the possibility of a new disease. An analysis of around 430 samples revealed the presence of malaria, common respiratory viruses like influenza, SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19), other coronaviruses, and adenovirus.
The global health agency, in collaboration with international teams of doctors and biologists, conducted extensive field investigations in the southeastern province of Kwango. Between late November and mid-December, the region reported 891 cases, with 48 related deaths. Patients presented symptoms such as cough, fever, and body weakness, often indicative of acute respiratory infections. However, the exact cause remained elusive for weeks.
WHO stresses that this outbreak highlights the severe impact common infectious diseases like respiratory infections and malaria can have on vulnerable populations struggling with food insecurity. Authorities in DRC first began noticing cases as early as October 24, but the first alert was raised in Kinshasa at the end of November, prompting the dispatch of an epidemiological team to the affected area.
Now that the cause of the mystery illness is known, targeted interventions can be implemented. However, the risk level in affected communities remains high. WHO evaluates the overall health risk for these communities as elevated. Nevertheless, the national risk is deemed low due to the localized nature of the event.
While the situation in Panzi, the affected health zone, may not be replicated elsewhere in DRC, the rise in malnutrition levels in other areas of the country bears close watch. The global and regional risk levels currently stand low.
