Breaking the Clog: Surabaya City Administration Takes Urgent Action to CleanxlSungai Perbatasan
Surabaya City Government (Pemkot) has taken emergency measures to clean up the river basin causing floods in Gunung Anyar. Syamsul Hariadi, the head of the Dinas Sumber Daya Air dan Bina Marga (DSDABM) of Surabaya, stated that the cleaning of eceng gondok (water hyacinth) choking the river flow has begun over the last two days using heavy machinery.
"At the request of the Acting Mayor, we have taken swift action," said Syamsul via a press release from the Diskominfo Surabaya on Saturday (28/12/2024). The primary objective is to unblock the water on the land and prevent flooding.
Syamsul further explained, "The enemy here is actually seawater. When eceng gondok comes into contact with seawater, it dies. However, when there’s a large amount of it, it means that the seawater hasn’t reached this area, and the freshwater can’t flow out."
This initial step will be followed by coordination with the Balai Besar Wilayah Sungai (BBWS) Brantas, which has jurisdiction over the river, and consultations with the Surabaya-Toll management. It is also planned to coordinate with the Sidoarjo Regional Government, whose area has also been affected by the floods.
