Breaking: Bus Driver Arrested After Hit-and-Run Incident on Tandes Barat Toll Road
A bus driver from Jaya Utama, operating vehicle with license plate L 7744 UV, was arrested by the Traffic Unit of the East Java Regional Police (Polrestabes) following a hit-and-run incident on the Tandes Barat Toll Road. The accident occurred at around 7:05 AM on Saturday, December 28th, approximately 5.6 kilometers into the toll road.
AKP Harrio Saputra, the Head of the Traffic and Road Safety Unit (PJR) of the East Java Police, stated that the incident took place as both the bus and a Wuling Alvez car with license plate W 1108 DD were traveling westward from the Tandes Barat Toll Road towards Romokalisari. The bus, driven by RK (45), a resident of Jalan Tambak Langis, Surabaya, has been taken to the police headquarters for further questioning.
The incident began when the bus, traveling in the middle lane, suddenly switched to the right lane to avoid a truck in front of it, ultimately colliding with the left side of the Wuling car in the right lane. Following the collision, the bus fled the scene without rendering assistance.
Sources close to the incident report no fatalities or damage to the toll road infrastructure. However, the estimated material damage is approximately IDR 13 million (USD ~950). The cause of the accident is suspected to be the bus driver’s lack of caution and failure to maintain a safe following distance.
Dashboard camera footage from the victim’s car, circulating on social media, captures the moment the bus, painted in blue, swerves into the right lane, causing panic among the car’s occupants. In the video, a passenger can be heard calling out to Allah. The bus is later seen exiting the toll road after striking the car.
AKBP Imet Chaerudin, the Head of the East Java Traffic Unit (Ditlantas) of the Regional Police, confirmed that the police have received the report and placed the bus driver under arrest. The investigation into the incident continues.
