Headline: Urgent Call to Action: KudusHIV/AIDS Fight Needs Stronger Government Intervention

The battle against HIV/AIDS in Kudus is cries out for more significant government intervention, warns the Commission for AIDS Prevention (KPA). The commission is pressing the Kudus Regency government to swiftly enact regulations for preventing and combating the virus.

Koordinator of the Kudus KPA, Eni Mardiyanti, lamented the government’s lax attitude towards HIV/AIDS, stating, "They’ve been less than serious about addressing this issue." Data shows a high prevalence of HIV and AIDS in Kudus, with cases detected across all its districts.

To combat this, Eni demands a specific regulation to guide both volunteers and the public in their efforts to tackle HIV/AIDS, calling for a dedicated government decree (Perbup) to steer the response.

The gravity of the situation is underscored by the mortality rate. Out of 105 recorded cases as of November 2024, 41 have resulted in fatalities. Eni emphasizes that HIV, compounded by AIDS, poses a deadly threat, and urges all stakeholders to unite in prevention and control efforts.

However, the lack of a dedicated implementing agency and minimal public awareness are fueling the spread of HIV/AIDS. Eni points to instances of babies contracting HIV from their mothers, who are unaware that HIV can be transmitted through breastfeeding.

Compounding the issue is the rise in high-risk sexual behaviors and increasing male-to-male sexual relationships (MSM), which have led to a rise in HIV/AIDS cases among MSM— amounting to 48 cases. Eni notes that over 180 hotspots in Kudus serve as gathering points for risky sexual activities and LGBTQ+ individuals.

The Kudus KPA underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive approach, involving robust government action, community engagement, and accurate health education to turn the tide against HIV/AIDS.
