Title: Macedonia‘s Christian Mickoski: No Constitution Changes Without EU Assurances
In an emphatic statement, Macedonian Prime Minister Christian Mickoski has made it crystal clear that constitutional changes, in line with the Negotiation Framework for starting EU membership talks, will not occur under his leadership and that of his party, VMRO-DPMNE. Speaking at his last press conference for the year, Mickoski underscored that without "guarantees from Brussels or a joint plan ensuring no further bilateral issues," there will be no constitutional revisions.
Mickoski emphasized, "I expect the Macedonian issue to finally see the light of day in Brussels. I want to sit down with people in Brussels and create a plan and scenario for the end game. I want to see an active participation plan that ensures we won’t face bilateral problems anymore."
Responding toqueries about the EU’s insistence on constitutional changes and the remarks of Parliament Speaker Afrim Gjashi, Mickoski maintained his stance, asserting that without his party’s political will, no constitutional amendments will occur. "There will be no political will, not while I lead the government and head VMRO-DPMNE. Without VMRO-DPMNE, there will be no constitutional changes," he asserted.
Mickoski, pragmatic in his approach, stated, "I’m not an adventurer or an exhibitionist. If I take a decision, I want it to signify the end of a process, not just the beginning. When someone in Brussels is ready to discuss ending the process, then I’ll be ready too."
