Headline: Common Virus Found in Intestines Linked to Alzheimer’s Development
In an intriguing twist to Alzheimer’s research, scientists have discovered a potential role for a common virus in contributing to the disease’s development. The human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), which infects around 80% of adults by the age of 80, has been found in the intestines of some Alzheimer’s patients, raising eyebrows among researchers.
While the connection between viruses and Alzheimer’s has long been suspected, this new study, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia journal, has uncovered a surprising link between this ubiquitous virus and a distinct subtype of Alzheimer’s. The research, conducted by teams from Arizona State University and Banner Institute for Alzheimer Research, suggests that the virus may travel from the intestines to the brain, modifying the immune system and contributing to changes associated with the disease.
The HCMV virus is believed to infect most people during their first few decades of life. It is one of the nine herpes viruses, but not typically associated with sexually transmitted diseases. It spreads through contact with bodily fluids and is only transmissible when the virus is active.
The study proposes that some individuals exposed to HCMV develop a chronic intestinal infection. The virus then enters the bloodstream or travels along the vagus nerve, a crucial information highway connecting the gut and the brain. Once in the brain, the virus is recognized by immune cells called microglia, which then activate a specific gene called CD83. The study hints that the virus may contribute to the biological modifications implicated in Alzheimer’s development.
Microglia, the immune cells of the brain, are activated in response to infections. While they initially protect the brain, sustained high activity can lead to chronic inflammation and neuronal damage, both linked to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
If the researchers’ hypotheses are confirmed, they could explore whether existing antiviral medications could treat or prevent this form of Alzheimer’s. The team is currently developing a blood test to identify individuals with active HCMV infections who might benefit from such drugs.
HCMV can infect people of all ages. Most infections are asymptomatic in healthy individuals, but they can cause mild illness similar to the flu. Roughly 80% of people test positive for HCMV antibodies by the age of 80, yet not everyone develops the disease. Researchers note that simple contact with HCMV, which affects nearly the entire global population, shouldn’t be a cause for concern. However, the new study suggests that for some, this common virus may be an underestimated factor in Alzheimer’s development.
