Chocolate Consumption: Emeritus Professor Silviu Constantinoiu on its Blood Pressure Impact

Tempting treat or hidden trigger? The surprising impact of chocolate on your digestion

Chocolate, a beloved indulgence for many, could have unexpected consequences on your health, particularly when it comes to your digestive system. While it’s known for its relaxing effects and mood-boosting abilities, chocolate, especially dark chocolate high in cocoa, can negatively impact the function of your esophagus.

In an exclusive interview with DC Medical and DC News’ Health Academy, Professor Emeritus Silviu Constantinoiu, a specialist in esophageal surgery, explains how chocolate consumption can exacerbate gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and offers solutions for those who refuse to forgo this culinary delight.

"During a manometry test, the normal pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is roughly between 12 and 20 millimeters of mercury. When the pressure drops below 10, often below 8, reflux appears. Chocolate, particularly dark chocolate which contains cocoa, can decrease this pressure," Professor Constantinoiu reveals.

He suggests, "If one still enjoys chocolate, they might consider switching to white chocolate, which is cocoa-free."

Chocolate can be a common trigger for GERD, and individuals experiencing heartburn or reflux should consider safer alternatives to protect their esophageal health. Opting for white chocolate could be a solution, but as always, consulting a specialist remains crucial for adequate dietary management and digestive health.

Chocolate’s acid reflux-inducing potential stems from several reasons. Its high fat and caffeine content can relax the LES muscle, allowing stomach acid to flow into the esophagus. Additionally, chocolate contains theobromine, which stimulates gastric acid production. Moreover, sugar and other additives in chocolate can contribute to esophageal mucosal inflammation, worsening acid reflux symptoms.
