In her debut address of the new year, Honduran President Xiomara Castro issued a stern warning to the incoming Trump administration, threatening to withdraw the US military base operating in Honduras since the 1980s.
"Let me make it clear, we anticipate a dialogue that is constructive and friendly with the newly elected US administration," Castro stated during a national radio and television broadcast. "However, we caution against unnecessary reprisals against our migrants, who significantly contribute to the US economy."
Castro underscored that if President-elect Donald Trump adopts a hostile approach towards immigration, Honduras would be forced to reevaluate its cooperation policies with the US, particularly in the military sphere. She hinted at a potential revocation of the bases currently operating in Honduras without any financial burden on the country.
The Joint Task Force Bravo, headquartered at the Soto Cano Air Base in Comayagua, has been in operation since 1982. It comprises over 500 US military personnel and 500 Honduran and US civilians.
President Castro’s announcement comes at a time of heightened tension surrounding immigration reform and the future of US military presence in Central America. As the new administration takes office, all eyes are on Honduras and the potential shifts in its diplomatic and military relations with the US.
