Man Detained in Attempt to Exchange Counterfeit Dollars in Haskovo
In a bold yet ill-advised move, a 59-year-old man attempted to exchange a substantial amount of counterfeit money at a local exchange bureau in Haskovo, Bulgaria. The bust took place on New Year’s Eve, around 2 PM local time, marking an unwelcome end to the year for the culprit.
The man, a national of Turkmenistan and a permanent resident of Bulgaria, tried to trade in $20,000 worth of suspiciously poor-quality U.S. dollars. Alert staff at the exchange bureau, however, were not fooled by the ruse and immediately contacted the local police.
Acting swiftly, the authorities detained the man soon after. An investigation is currently underway, with regional police directorate assuring the public that all necessary measures are being taken to bring the perpetrator to justice.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in preventing and combating financial fraud. As always, members of the public are urged to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
