Exclusive: Poland Investigates Former Defense Minister Antόni Macierewicz for Possible Treason
Prosecutors have opened an investigation into former Defense Minister Antόni Macierewicz following allegations that his decision not to join a multinational program to acquire air-refueling aircraft in 2016 caused significant harm to Poland’s security and defense capabilities.
The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the investigation is being conducted under Article 129 of the Criminal Code, which deals with ‘acts harmful to the interests of the Republic of Poland.’ This law applies to officials who, while acting on behalf of the nation, commit acts that harm Poland’s interests.
At the heart of the investigation is Macierewicz’s decision to exclude Poland from the Multi-National Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MMF) program, a joint venture of European NATO countries, including Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway, aimed at acquiring and operating Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft.
The ‘Karkonosze’ Project
The Polish Air Force’s need to acquire its own air-refueling capabilities, known as the ‘Karkonosze’ program, was identified years before Macierewicz’s decision. The MMF was seen as an inexpensive and efficient way to achieve this goal, as it allowed Poland to cooperate with other nations to share the costs and benefits of maintaining and operating these expensive aircraft.
Macierewicz’s decision to withdraw Poland from the MMF has been criticized by military experts, who argue that it has significantly hampered Poland’s air force capabilities and strategic independence. Despite the setback, Poland has continued to express interest in acquiring its own air-refueling capabilities, but concrete progress has been slow.
The Investigation
The investigation follows a report by General Jarosław Stróżyk, head of the Military Counterintelligence Service, who accused Macierewicz of ‘treason’ in October 2020. This report, along with corresponding documents, was subsequently passed on to the Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutors have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and have not yet made any public statements on the timeline or expected outcome. However, this investigation highlights the ongoing debate in Poland about the strategic direction and decision-making process within its defense establishment.
