Patterson is serving her sentence at the prison located west of Melbourne following her conviction for murdering three former extended relatives. Justice Action co-ordinator Brett Collins, a former inmate speaking to AAP on Friday, stated that Patterson’s long-term isolation violates international norms. The advocacy group invoked United Nations rules named after Nelson Mandela, which stipulate that individuals should not endure more than 15 consecutive days in solitary confinement. “She’s a frightened woman, understandably so,” Collins said, noting that Patterson had pre-existing disorders before her conviction and is now unaccustomed to people being around her.

Advocacy Push for Peer Counselling and Mental Health Support

Despite not yet being allowed direct contact with Patterson, Justice Action relies on information from other prisoners in the same unit to assess her poor mental state. To counteract the psychiatric damage associated with prolonged confinement, the group has proposed providing Patterson with a trained peer support mentor. Collins emphasized that this intervention would be offered at no cost to taxpayers.

The Department of Justice and Community Safety issued a statement noting that while it does not comment on individual prisoner placements, all prisoners had regular contact with prison staff, health professionals, lawyers and chaplains. Meanwhile, public reporting indicates that Patterson has been granted access to the popular weightloss drug while she is behind bars.

Sentencing Context and Inmate Hostility

During the sentencing proceedings, Justice Christopher Beale made Patterson eligible for parole after serving 33 years behind bars. Taking into account the dangers she confronted from fellow inmates, Justice Beale specifically noted the prolonged duration she was anticipated to remain in isolation.

Collins explained that the specific nature of Patterson’s crimes has made her particularly unpopular with other female prisoners. At a lunch in July 2023, Patterson prepared a meal of beef Wellingtons tainted with death cap mushrooms, resulting in the fatal poisonings of three former extended relatives for which she was found guilty. “What they’re arguing is that other prisoners are hating her because of what she did,” Collins said, while also pointing out that female inmates shared a common view regarding the profound violation of trust by the family members who partook in the meal with her.
