Breaking: Subzero Temperatures Force Suspension of Train Services Between Narvik, Luleå, and Stockholm
In a chilling development, train services between Narvik, Luleå, and Stockholm have been temporarily suspended due to severely low temperatures in Norrland, a Swedish subarctic region. The Swedish Transport Authority (Trafikverket) has advised SJ, the national railway company, to halt operations until further notice.
"We’re expecting temperatures to dip below -30°C in Norrland," confirmed Leila Fogelholm, SJ’s press spokesperson, in an interview with Norwegian news outlet Fremover. The extreme cold poses significant safety risks, with temperatures this low posing a danger to both infrastructure and passengers.
The decision to suspend train services comes after the Swedish Traffic Administration recommended SJ to stop running trains on a specific stretch due to lack of parallel road access. This means that if a train were to encounter difficulties, there would be no alternate route for passengers to take.
"We can’t have people sitting imprisoned in a train at temperatures lower than -30°C," Fogelholm emphasized. Passengers’ safety is the top priority, and services will resume once temperatures rise and conditions improve.
Services are expected to remain paused from Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning. However, the weather forecasts suggest that these subzero temperatures will persist into Sunday, potentially delaying the restart of operations.
"We’ll have a meeting with the traffic administration tomorrow to decide if we can resume services," Fogelholm shared. Trafikverket will be the final authority determining if it’s safe to restart operations.
